Streaming Video in v2.0

Hey Developers, I'm having issues trying to stream video in v2.0. There isn't an option for it in the drop down menu and I'm trying to think of a way to get it to work. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!

Fred, I did not find any information on your blog pertaining to v2.0 and streaming video. The "Streaming Video" link on your page is blacked out. Andy

Hi Fred, I have referenced your blog a couple of times for other solutions and find it helpful. I am having the same issue as acarter above and cannot find the link you refer to for streaming video in your blog. Can you paste the specific link?

Ok, tho I lost a few links, not all is lost. I didn't have a link to streaming video, just to streaming audio. I mistakenly thought it was to video, but believe the same issues are involved and the thread could solve the problem. Operative word is 'could'. Fredd

Streaming Audio has been done with BTv1.5 with some hacking. Seems easy but I've not done it yet. I have Streaming Audio working in BTv2.0 using the Launch Native action plugin. I also have YouTube via the Launch Native action plugin. I believe Streaming Video in BTv2.0 should be easy to accomplish. Fred

The videos I have are on my own server. I just need to find a way to link it from my v2.0 app.

Yes, but the issue with a private channel is your subscribers need to be on a list to view your videos. My videos are hosted on my own domain, I just want to find a way to link them.

Viemo might be a solution. They offer the ability to upload your videos. The Basic (Free) package is very generous to ability to use your own domain. I tried uploading a video but was unable to get it to play. I tried two different formats. Fred

I think Vimeo would be a long shot. It looks like another Youtube. But I'll give it a try. Thanks Fred!

Another YouTube is a fairly accurate description. It does seem to offer some additional features, but I don't know everthing YouTube offers. Embedding the URL is easy just copy the link and use Launch Native App (Youtube) and paste into the URL. Embedding the actual video for offline use (No internet) I'm sure can be done but I haven't figured that out yet. If you can use their service & API for videos hosted on your server is also not clear. But being able to use your own domain name is listed as a PRO feature. Fred

Well, I purchased the pro Vimeo and it wouldn't work for me. BUT I have found a way to get videos to play. What I did was create an HTML page and have Buzztouch link via Custom URL. On my host, I uploaded an HTML file and included the following HTML: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://releases.flowplayer.org/swf/flowplayer-3.2.1.swf" width="640" height="360"> <param name="movie" value="http://releases.flowplayer.org/swf/flowplayer-3.2.1.swf" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <param name="flashVars" value="config={'playlist':[{'url':'Your Link Goes Here','autoPlay':true}]}" /> <span title="No video playback capabilities, please download the video below">Your Title Here</span> </object> The only issue I'm having is getting it to play auto full screen on load. Any tips?

Not sure, but if you used an HTML doc that linked to your server would that work? Fred

Also try 100% instead of a stated pixel width and height. Fred

@acarter: I am trying to follow you on the above but am not sure I understand. I am using v2.0/Android and have tried creating a new custom html screen and pasting your above code which I then modify with my video location (on my server). When I refresh everything and launch it on my phone to test it I get nothing. Would you share your step-by-step process with me? The other option is for me to launch native youtube but I am afraid where this app if being used there may not be enough reception to have access. Finally, the last thought is to "package" the short videos and make them a part of the app download/install. It would be native and the user would have to remove the files once they are done. FYI.. I ma trying to make a self guided walking tour app for a local historic site with video segments.

I should also say that I am experiencing a app crash when the youtube video completes and screen goes black. I try to use my phone's back button to go back to the app (to allow the user to go onto the next site and video) but it crashes.

Silly question, can you use Launch Native App YouTube and use a url that 'points' to an embedded video? FYI, the BTv2.0 Custom HTML text screen has had some issues that may or maynot have been resolved. Fred

A good way is to use a custom URL, put a MP4 / M4V video file on a server and just put in the URL to it. Like this: http://www.yourserver.com/videos/streamingvideo.m4v That's it. Apple Devices will start playing the video natively and full screen.

I tried this with Android and no luck. I placed a .avi video in a public dropbox and placed the link in the Native App/Browser screen. My phone downloaded the video instead of just playing it. I guess Android does not have a native player?

sorry I misread the post. I added another screen (custom url) to try this and still no luck. Now it opens a new screen/page however it is just black. When I tap it nothing happens.

I am slow today - I just realized that maybe the format is the problem. Let me see if I save it to .3gp if that works...

Try mp4. It's the primary standard today. Should work. 3GP is outdated. AVI is not the right container today anymore. But I can only speak for iOS, because I don't have access to an Android device.

Interesting... .mp4 forces my device to choose a app to watch the video. It plays it in only horizontal format (which is fine by me). .3gp produces a black screen (I was just using this cuz Android's site says it supports it).

There's certainly a method since others do so. Question is what's the correct formula. Fred

no, you need to have a player that will play a video on any device. How many videos do you have in your app?

@trailman, I have two apps that'll play videos. I can use a player. Why won't the two apps play the video? Obviously the URL is not calling the apps, but why not? Fred

@trailman - My app is a walking tour of a historic site and uses 10 videos (the feature of the app). I provide the user two options to access the videos: one is through a simple menu list and the other is through a html image-map. The menu list works for me using the "Launch Native App" screen with "Youtube" option (note to use the "long link" as the short link from youtube causes problems). The image-map option uses the "Launch Native App" screen with "Browser/Url" option. I am having crashing issues though but I think they are unrelated to anything in this post (Exception class: java.lang.NullPointerException Source method: BT_viewUtilities.updateBackgroundColorsForScreen()
