Must our clients have Apple developper accounts ?

I've been wondering about this one and I'm not too sure about the answer. If we are developping for our clients, has each one got to have a developper account on can we publish with our own developper's account? If so, will the personnal account do or do I have to get them a business one ? Thanks

Apple's Rules state that each of your clients that you submit for must have their own accounts. For sure there are lots of devs getting around this with all sorts of tricks but it's not allowed in Apple's eyes. I think its BEST to ask clients to get their own accounts. There are a few reasons for this and I've suggested it since long before Apple enforced it. a) If clients aren't willing to pay the $99 you probably have the wrong client (good acid test) and won't make money with them anyway. b) Submitting lots of apps under you account but for your clients puts in you harms way. Negative ratings on your profile, your clients may compete with each other, your account may for whatever reason get suspended (gosh forbid but could happen) and all your clients are hosed! c) Long term: For sure you don't a call in three years from Joe Client (who stopped paying you long ago) that suddenly NEEDS YOU and expects you to help him again for free. Happens! d) Branding: It's very likely that your clients doesn't want your developer name plasters on their app in the App Store (it shows, you can't hide it). e) It opens up more work and opportunity for you. Babysit your Apple account service fee. Teach you about your Apple account fee, etc, etc. f) Taxes: Your dev account sells products in app purchase style FOR your client through your client app - IRS looks to you. Yes, always, you're the seller. I have dozens more but you get the idea. Sign-em-up, take their $500 - $10,000, make them a great app - it's worth it.

The answer given above are excellent. A simple rule to follow: Who's app is it? Your app, your account. Their app, their account. Next thing to consider: Why is their app on your Buzztouch Control Panel and not on theirs? Fred

Good point about the bt control panel. Get a self-hosted panel going...charge them to use it or charge them to use it 'for them' :-)

Good point David. So, we can offer our client the build ipa file with their certificate inside it ? I am little bit confused at this point.

Yes, great answer David, thanks. Just thinking loudly, Let's say we bill our customers a monthly fee. Then they can just stop paying whenever they want and their app stays live under their account. With websites we can just shut them down if they don't pay. This leads me to another question....real newbie one at that. Is the ipa actually hosted on Apple servers, or do we host them ? Thanks again.

@David: Good point. I will follow it for sure. @Paddy: the ipa files are hosted on Apple servers
