User Input

Hello Everyone! I was wondering if it was possible to create a text field so that the app can capture text from the user. I want to have the user type in text and the app will plugin the text into the url below: http://170.158.70.4/oasis/catalog/?installation=WHHS&urlcommand=search&databases=0000000186&query1=TEST&query2=&query3=&attr1=0021&attr2=0000&attr3=0000&op1=&op2=&media=&0000000186= For Example: If user types in TEST URL will be what is above with ...query1=TEST... Thank You! Tyler

Hi @tyler3153, Welcome to buzztouch! This is totally doable via HTML and PHP. Not sure how comfortable you are with that technology, but there are TONS of tutorials online about creating forms that send via PHP Post. Essentially, you would create an HTML form with a variable that represents the text in the text box. Then, you have a submit button that appends the information to the URL you mentioned above. Do a bit of research on Google, and if you're still having trouble, post back, and I can send you some sample code. Mark

Mark, Thank you very much for your response! Unfortunately, I know very little about HTML. I have been studying a little bit of Java but I cannot figure out how to write HTML code that allows me to set a variable and use that variable within a URL. I've attempted to find tutorials online but I'm not being able to understand them. Thanks, Tyler

Mark, Thank you so much! I'm currently designing this application for my school. It began as a fun project and turned into something teachers and students could find useful. When it comes to programming in any language, I am completely lost! I appreciate your help very much! Thank You, Tyler

Hi Tyler, This is going to take just a bit more research than I originally thought. I'm assuming that you want to link directly to the URL you provided, but with the info from the text field in it. That means we can't use PHP, because it's not a PHP script in the URL. I'm investigating a way to use JavaScript to insert the text info into the URL. I'm sure it can be done, but my JavaScript experience is limited. So, this is a good learning opportunity for me! Mark

Mark, Thank you so much for helping me out! You are correct about the URL and text input situation. I'll continue to do some research also. Thank You! Tyler
