Developing Apps for iOS - Free Courses on iTunes U

Got a hold of this the other day, great content and free - http://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/developing-apps-for-ios-sd/id395631522 Do I understand most of it? That is another question. Us Scots love our free stuff, they say copper wire was invented when two Scots found a penny at the same time.

The Stanford stuff is for sure a great resource. In fact, I can say (with direct experience) that lots and lots of universities and colleges are modeling their mobile curriculum around this exact content. However...there's a wee problem...IMO. I think the level of understanding necessary to be able to take advantage of these types of courses goes beyond what most new and aspiring developers are looking to do. This is of course isn't to say that the material is 'too tough' it's just that most new folks seem to struggle getting their head around the idea of studying and putting enough time into the learning process. The fact is, it can (and does) take literally years to learn some of this stuff if you're starting from scratch. We've been working very hard recently (hence my absence in the forums) on our soon to be released buzztouch U content, and new site design and message. When the new site design is released, you'll see a major focus on learning. BTU is a series of lessons and learning modules (watch a video, pass a test) that are designed to be taken in order. The intention is not to teach folks how to program but instead to give them enough content, in an organized learning process, to help get them off to a good start. For sure it's buzztouch focussed but many of the lessons and much of the learning is not buzztouch centric. We're stoked to help folks learn, and we're stoked to finally be able to formalize a long overdue process. BTU, mixed with Stanford's content and other higher-level teaching is surely worth doing!

Nice one. This stuff is above me, way over my head. Did .net in college and decided to sell the stuff rather than code! I liked the idea of reading through and while not understanding most, it gave me a better understanding of how and what talks to who and when type thing. Can't wait to see the fruits of your labour (yes, labor with a u darn iPhone!) All this new stuff sounds sweet, love the learning / teaching approach. Love it. May the next couple of weeks fly in!

I'm stoked for BTU as well! I think it's going to be super cool, and a great way to really help people understand what they can and can't do with buzztouch, and give them more ownership of the entire learning process. Should be pretty sweet! Mark

In my past I have done some science teaching and have been dismayed at the computer teaching in schools, I say BTU should be pumped directly into schools a programming exercise, they usually learn some skills so outdated that I was more knowledgeable than my young vibrant students. I sign up to BTU classes and promise this time not to set the fire alarm of in the BTU school. I will not bring you an apple though as Macapple would call me a swot, is Parker the PhysEd teacher and is GoNorthWest(mark) the prefect.

Happy days gents. Will be Tweeting about BTU in no time, maybe even selling the concept coast to coast. Those who can, code, those who can't sell! Or words to that effect. Think these crazy West coast folks have some sweet treats coming our way. Marko - swot! GoNorthWest as prefect, like that notion. David as the ninja head teacher ( don't think the heads wear those capes that ours did Marko) and maybe room for me as the janitor?

I don't know about prefect! More like the nerdy kid in the corner who is always raising his hand! David and the gang are indeed positioning things to make BT even more awesome than it is today. I can't wait for the unveiling! Mark

Macapple - janitor! that like saying Celtic are Sunday league football team Mark as nerdy kid - what ever happened to these nerdy kids Bill Gates and Steve Jobs I wonder what career they had David would be one of those nice teachers that everyone likes but at some point one cheeky kids pushes too hard and David goes postal and removes his BT privileges and no early adopter status.
