A small quirk?

Hey there buzz-O-naughts If I turn off my Internet.. Airplane mode for example.. While running my app you get the failure to load data window popping up.. Obviously I have the content loaded directly in the app so is there anything I can do to prevent this? It's a common complaint from my app users?? Phil

Hi, Check this doc out : http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Understanding_App_Refresh_and_Offline_Apps_v1.0.pdf Basically, you need to disable the Report to Cloud URL. That removes the refresh button, and prevents it from going online to check for updates. But, once you remove it, if it was previously enabled for a user, they can't get it back unless they update to a new version (with it enabled) via iTunes. Mark

I had another look around the forum.. this was from david... v1.5: To 'go offline' - do two things: a) In the control panel, remove the Configuraiton Data > dataURL in the Core Properties settings. Also remove the Report To Cloud URL > Cloud URL. Clear these boxes then save. b) In the control panel, still in Core Properites, click the link in the Configuration Data area that reads 'show the configuration data' to open a new window with your apps latest config data. The data you are looking is used by the app to operate. It updates each time you make a change in the control panel. Look closely and you'll see it has NO dataURL and no reportToCloud URL. This is because you erased them then saved. Save this data as a text file on your computer. Next, copy it's contents into the Xcode project. You're over-writing the BT_Config > BT_config.txt file. Now, when the app launches it will not check anywhere online for it's configuration, it already has it. Compile, upload to iTunes. An App Store Update will be needed to make changes to your apps layout and content. ... I did all that and found I still get the error message.. [problem downloading some data, check internet connection].. I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing.. my three apps work very nicely, but the users with no internet connection available at all times are frustrated.. is is possible to turn the error message off?

I don't think they 'need' to be blank, if the reference to the Report to URL is blank, but it's best to remove them anyway, just to be sure. That might be the reason you're having that issue. Mark

when I made them blank the config corrupted the file.. so ill leave them in for now!.. its perplexing! with the dataURL and the cloud URL blank, and I open each screen once with the internet on, then turn off the internet, I can browse the app with no error messages other than that I get the error message, so I wonder if the app needs to cache the data once? oh its a mystery all right!!

Well, it does get kinda weird. If you have stuff it needs to grab from the Internet, it is supposed to cache it the first time it grabs it. If everything is local, and you have turned off Report to Cloud and Config URL, then it should never even try to access the Internet. Things get weird when you start your app in online mode, then make a change to it. It's even weirder on the side of the users, some of whom may have made updates, and some of whom might not have. I spent a lot of time trying to decide, from a design perspective, which is the best course of action. I ended up deciding that if I could make all my data local, and there were not a lot of updates to be made, then it was better to take it completely offline from the start. But every case is different. Mark

This one draws some stuff from the web, and both Report to Cloud and Configuration URL are enabled: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ovfps/id463181339 This one is completely offline (no Config/Report to URL), but does need an Internet connection for maps. All other content is local: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/az-fishing-spots/id468548506 Mark
