Updating app in 'real time'

Hi guys, Sorry if this is a stupid question. In the FAQ it states the following: ... your online control panel allows you to make real-time, instant changes to your app - even after it's compiled and in use. End users will see changes the next time the app is launched on their device. *** You cannot change the icon associated with your app, the one that shows on device home screens, without re-compiling the app then re-distributing it. I don't fully understand how this works? How do changes on this site get transfered to the app exactly?

When you make changes to the app, on the buzztouch website the changes also go to the app. This can be good and bad, depending on the apps purpose. For instance if you add a new page to the menu online, it will also add a menu with the content to the app.

But if we need to the compile the app in xcode how do any changes we make on here instantly take effect on devices all across the world?

Seriously, the versioncode tells the app there's an update, then update via internet.

There's also a link in the app to the Buzztouch site to notify the app of updates.

So, for example, a news website could use Buzztouch to make live updates?

Read through the documentation. It will give you a better picture of what can be done. In particular, this section deals with the Report to Cloud feature that enables updating on the fly: http://www.buzztouch.com/docs/v1.5/reportToCloud.php As for your question regarding a news site, generally news would be fed through rss. That would constantly update without need to make changes on Buzztouch. I've got a couple dozen apps that pull news feeds through rss and they work great.

Where do I go to learn everything there is to know about the limitations of Buzztouch? To implement more complicated functions like a universally shared rating system (similar to amazon rating as an example), saving 'screens' into a favourites tab, a search function, etc. what would I need to do? I am assuming that buzztouch helps with the basic setup and that I will need to take things onto the next level in xcode?

You're asking questions that most of us don't have answers to. This is emerging technology that even computer programers don't know about. They're using last years tools, buzztouch is this years technology. As for learning everything, probably not possible. As for learning, various resources. Start with the Help menu, read the Forum, search on Google things you don't understand, then ask dumb questions, that's how we learn. Fred

Hi, And here's a document that describes exactly how online vs. offline works with Buzztouch. Keep in mind that v1.4 is online only. http://www.buzztouch.com/resources/Understanding_App_Refresh_and_Offline_Apps_v1.0.pdf Mark

Ok, thanks a lot guys. So basically with Buzztouch I can make as complicated an app as I want? It just seems to me that the tools that Buzztouch provide are very basic. I want to add more complicated functions like shuffle, search and a universally shared and averaged star ratings. At what stage do I add things like this to my app? Is it when I compile the app in xcode or? Also I want make the app visually different. To do things like the above is it advisable to create a basic app with all the content in Buzztouch and then slowly upgrade the app, or should I learn how to code everything like that by hand from the start? Bare in mind I will need to spend the next 3-6 months gathering the content for this app.

Hi @ Student, have you attempted to make any apps yet? buzztouch is a very powerful tool, they even give you all the source code for free! i would suggest diving in and building some sort of app, take it as far as you can...then you can always post for more help on the forum or hiring a developer to finish your project would keep costs down...good luck and kee at it, so worth it!

Hi, Student (?!) similarly to you, I can see all sorts of things I'd like to implement. But BT is great for getting to know how to build Apps from the ground up. I think then you can add further tools in xcode. I'm also sure BT will be improving and adding features to keep us all happy!
