Guidance on learning Java

The more involved in BT apps the more I am keen to tweak. Is Java the right route and any guidance on first steps.

Hi Marko, For Android, Java is what you need to know (assuming you want to change the base functionality). For iOS, it's Objective-C. If you want to do cool things using a basic HTML screen, then learning JavaScript and PHP are good ways to go. Lots that can be done there. Mark

Thank you that really helps, I will check out the new boston site. From your advice I gather that the three key areas are java, php and html 5. The last time I was involved with programming was learning assembly on the commodore 64, it feels a lot easier to learn a language now with the web etc, but so many different languages that your advice really helps.

PHP has a ton of uses, but it of course requires a client connection to a server running PHP. But tie it in with mySQL, and the skies the limit! HTML5 is totally up and coming, and worth learning.

HTML5 would be easier, but it would be more limited to web page and web app design. Java can be used for many things, but is significantly harder. I, personally, would pick HTML5. Mark

Thanks Mark, you have confirmed my thoughts that it is best for me with my limited experience to go HTML5 and get the basics of Java understood on the side. The problem with developing app that sources files from web is the high data charges at present on phone contracts so many user are reticent to have app that references the web but I think this will change with unlimited data packages for mobile phones. Also it is inferred that many users are moving away from flash to HTML5.

Lol my first computer was the commodore vic 20! I'd code all day long to play a tank game for 2 min before my dad came home and the tv/computer would turnoff for dinner and with the vic 20 once off all memory was wiped so to play again i'd code for another entire day! HTML5 is much easier lol...

After taking your advice I focused on HTML just checked on amazon for any books on HTML 5 this has come up and thought it might be useful to anyone else --- Learn HTML5 And JavaScript For iOS: Web Standards-Based Apps For iPhone, iPad, And iPod Touch [Paperback] I am not sure about learning from a book, I learned dreamweaver and CSS via a great series of videos on youtube, but apps are so important to me I want to cover all bases. PS Anarchy Digital I lusted for Vic 20 but my mum bought me a spectrum with its rubbery keys and the worse basic in the world. I still have a Zx81 (this is starting to get very geeky and nostalgic and makes me feel less a modern app developer and more an old codger)
