RSS Feed Reader Plugin

Ok, so I am making a new plugin using the blank screen plugin as a starting point. I want the user to input the URL of an rss feed in the plugin settings and then the plugin displays that feed on the screen. From reading the plugin guide, I see that the index.php screen is where the user can input data which gets saved into the app's database... so is that where I should put the field for the RSS URL and it gets saved into app that way? Also, I think I understand that to display the Rss feed I would then call that variable in the objective-C and the java script file to display that data right? Any other tips past this point highly appreciated :D cheers!

Are you going to create an rss reader that will display the content in a mobile friendly way? That would be awesome to share with us!!

Hi mitchell, yes that is what I would like to do... I was thinking that since RSS is usually restricted to displaying only images, videos, and text, and does so with VERY LITTLE formatting, that it would display really nice on a mobile phone. The only thing is whether I should just display the RSS page itself or actually grab or scrape the RSS data and then display it? I guess the first one would be much easier LOL Will post here when I have some progress made on it, or if I get stuck hehe cheers jason

@ jasonthewebmaster: Two things to consider here. 1) Your first question, how to allow user to enter the url for the RSS feed. Have a look at the index.php page for the Custom URL plugin, it does exactly the same thing - asks a user for the URL. You'll end up copying a section of the HTML code from that index.php into your new index.php. 2) How to display the RSS. There are lots and lots of ways to do this. I don't quite understand your question about 'calling the variable in objective c for the javascript' comment. Not sure what you're planning here. The reality is, it's impossible to teach folks Objective C, Java, and all the other technologies necessary to create new screens. If you're usure how to create iOS View Controllers and Android Activities (java), you'll have a steep learning curve. But..keep with it, it's very worth it. I would start very very basic and see if you can get a simple plugin working. Then, add a variable, like your RSS url and see if you can access that variable in your code (look at the other plugins, they show you how to get the data from the control panel). The idea is that you'll get better over time but will need to spend enough time in the beginnign to understand Objective C and Java, it's not an overnight kinda thing. lastly: RSS feed reader is for sure on our radar for plugins. THis means if you don't get it, we will eventually ;-)
