Eclipse Platform Options

Hi Folks, I have pushed out a handfull of IOS Apps already and I am finally getting around to using Eclipse so I can push more out on Andriods. I watched the video on getting started to test configuation set up by creating a HelloWorld app to test. My question is that the only platforms available to me are etiher 3.2 or 4.0. Will this be a problem? I know the video mentions always selecting 1.6 (google api's), but I dont have 1.6 as an option. My concern is that a bunch of folks wont be able to run my apps. Should I be concerned? File>New>Andriod Project>Project Name> Select Build Target Google API’s: The only options for platforms is 3.2 or 4.0.

Hi Racer X, If you use this guide to setup your eclipse environment you'll see a section to add additional components. With buzztouch v1.5 or later you'll need to follow this step to download google's 2.2 API level 8. http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html#AddingComponents

Thanks Parker, I missed the 3.1 on the first set up. Got it now. Much appreciated.

Check these out as well : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4993711/Setting_Up_Your_Android_Development_Environment_v1.1.pdf http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4993711/Compiling_Your_Android_Application_v1.0.pdf Make sure you check out the Readme.txt that comes with your Android package so you understand what's supported and what's not, so you won't be surprised! Got em Mark, thanks much, reading them now. Also, can you help me understand: I have an iphone and test my IOS apps on it. I am finally going to pick up a tablet to test Android apps on it as well. I figure this should be enough in terms of testing apps on actual devices. Is that sufficient? Or do you usually test apps on many different device versions? Does it matter if I get the latest Android operating system? For example 4.0 vs 2.x?

Hi Racer X, I'll start by saying that I don't have any Android apps out there yet, but the ones I've been working on, I have people I know test them on their devices. That amounts to three people with three different devices. The great thing about Android is that I can put the apk package on the web, and have people easily download and install it! Android has so many devices and different versions of Android OS that it's just about impossible to cover everything. I would think that if you test it on at least one live device, that would suffice. I'm sure you'll get feedback from your users if things don't work well on other devices! ;-) Thanks, Mark
