user current location and POI around them

Hi gang, I have been researching this for days and am not sure it is even possible. I am rookie developing for android. I'd like to have a menu item that says 'Places to Eat' and when they click it, it shows them restaurants in a radius around them. I understand you can pull this data from a file but can I just plug into google places API and have this auto populated. I can't see myself creating a list of all the places by hand... Any help much appreciated :)

Hi mcfly, I know some people have had experience with this link : http://code.google.com/apis/maps/articles/geospatial.html. I've not had a chance to implement anything like this myself yet, but it looks very promising. Mark

Sorry to have to add another comment but im still having issues. I have clicked and read just about every link on this subject but am still struggling. Most of the tutorials deal with loading the points of interst manually. I can see in bt 1.5 i can have a map location showing users current location but is there a way to show restaurants for example close to that user that get pulled from google rather than a hosted file. I dont care which restaurants, i just want to provide this option to the user. Again sorry for another post but any help greatly appreciated :)
