Mistakes beginners often make--advice?

Hey guys, Really like what I've seen so far from this community and am excited to join it. I'm a dental student who is about to take boards and realized there's no good app out there for us to study on. I read over everything and started making some basic menus and questions. I am going to hand enter several thousand questions for flashcards (It'll help me study). I was hoping you guys who know what you're talking about might have a few helpful words to a first time app developer. Any errors you guys learned from? I would really like something where you can click to rate the frequency that the flashcard appears based on the how well the user knew the answer. Is this possible? Thanks for any help you guys can help me out with, all advice is appreciated Alec

Hi Alec, congrats on finishing dental school - good stuff. First...I would do this: Jump on the early adopter list (link in control panel) so you can start using v1.5. You're using v1.4 which is ok but it's far less flexible. The idea is that as you tinker a bit you'll quickly see how more options and flexibility are necessary to do 'just the right thing.' v1.5 excels at flexibility. I would stongly encourage you to NOT manually enter thousands of questions for a quiz. Even if you think it's good study, bad idea technically ;-) When you see v1.5 this will make a bit more sense. The idea is that screens in v1.5 (like a quiz) can be connected to remote files you store on a DropBox or website. You can create a text file (or a few of them) to hold all your questions / answers then update them without having to use the control panel. Jump on v1.5, explore a bit, and get to studying your teeth stuff...far more important! LOL. Welcome aboard.

Hi, thought I'd tag my question on here rather that create a new topic! Is there any tutorials on how to create quizzes, or more specifically, how to link them into the app? Should the questions and answers be in a spreadsheet? Also, I'm looking to set up dynamic answer so that the answer for a question won't always appear in the same spot on the list - this can be done easily enough in excel, but I'm not sure if the app would be able to handle it (might be one for v2!). Thanks, CT

Hi in Scotland, Have a look at the v1.5 documentation, specifically the quiz screen. Try to get your head around how the JSON data is provided by a backend webserver or dropbox account. The process supports exactly what you're asking about. If you can figure out how to 'produce' the quizzes data file, either manually or from a database, you'll be well on your way to making some much more compelling apps. The remove-data approach is useful in tons of situations, not just quizzes. Maps, Menus, Lists, etc. If the advanced properties on any given screen type shows a Data URL you'll be able to use the same logic.
