Jpeg's, Jpg's, Png's & other images

In my app I wish to display various images using jpeg's or png's. I have sucessfully done this but several images will not load or never finish loading when the screen is selected. (Sometimes I'm using a link from dropbox where the images are stored). The results are inconsistent. Does anyone have some insight into the best format for the images, max. file size, other possible variables?

Both on virtual device & actual phone. Files vary but one is 477 KB. Using both wifi (phone & VD) and 3G (phone). I'm able to open the images stored on the phone's sd card using another app & I'm able to open the images using the dropbox app.

In my experience, PNG images work the best, as they tend to be smaller in file size. JPG is good for images that are of photographic quality, but generally have bigger file sizes. Network conditions always play a part in how long it takes to load things, so the smaller the better. If you have images that will never change, they are better off packaged up with your app locally.
