Can you use an iPhone simulator when creating apps?

OK, so I have a Windows PC. Is it possible to create iPhone apps with my PC using an iPhone simulator? If so, could someone suggest a good bit of software to use. I gather Airplay SDK did the job, but since it has been rebranded Marmalade it's not available to smaller developers. Other than that, it's off to get an iPad! MTIA, Steve

Hi Steve, Unfortunately, to develop for iOS, you need an Intel based Mac running one of the newer versions of Mac OS. Granted you can design your app in Buzztouch, but in order to run the app, it has to be compiled using Xcode and an SDK, which only runs on a Mac. Some people, I think, have had some success running Mac OS in a VM, but Apple generally frowns on that. Bottom line...to create an app for Apple, you have to be using Apple products! I found a cheap Mac Mini on Craigslist that has allowed me to enter the game. Thanks! Mark

You don't need an iPhone or iPad, but you do need a Mac computer. The xcode software only runs on a Mac. A number of people here have bought Mac minis since they are fairly inexpensive. You can check eBay too.

So I got a used MacBook to develop for iOS, but do not have a device to test on, who do I get around this for the submission phase?

To me, testing on a real device is very essential, but it's not required by Apple. If you know somebody with a device, you could ask them to test it for you. You could also try https://testflightapp.com/sdk/ if you know people but they don't live close to you! Thanks, Mark
