Android and IOS Help

I've finished creating the app now I need help compiling the code. I'm a novice at both. Is there anyway to compile code and have people download the app from my server until I get it approved by Apple and Android Market? Willing to Pay for your assistance.

Hi @dadkins, First things first. For Apple/iOS, in order to publish your app (or even test it on a real device), you're going to need to be part of the $99/yr Apple Developer Program. If you have not signed up for that, you won't be able to do anything past testing it on your virtual iPhone or iPad. If that's something you're interested in, sign up, then come back and ask the same question, and we can provide tons and tons of help. in fact, here's the first article you'll want to read and understand : http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=10EFDB8B90E3CEA983E9322&status=&searchInput=search...&sortColumn=FT.dateStampUTC&sortUpDown=DESC¤tPage=1&doViews=1 Android does not have the same limitations. You can distribute your application without using a store, and by just putting the .apk file on a website and having somebody with an Android device browse to it. If you are ready to release it, you will need to sign it with a release key. Here's a link with a whole bunch of information to get you going : http://www.talkandroid.com/android-sdk-install-guide/ Back to iOS...you can share your app (with a development certificate, not a release one) and have them test it before it becomes live on the App Store. But, you will not be able to distribute it from your own server (well, maybe there is a way, but Apple won't like it). Apple controls everything related to this endeavor, so you'll just have to play by their rules! Hope this helps a bit. Please post back if you have any further questions. Mark

I've applied for both and been accepted. So that's the good news. The bad news is although I've got all that done, I'm still trying to figure out how to compile and post for submission and put on my site for downloads. Can anyone help with that? I'm actually trying to get something up by tomorrow, I do have a small budget to pay for assistance.

Hi @dadkins, Cool! Welcome to the world of app development! You won't be able to compile an iOS app and post it on a web site for downloads. You can compile and use something link appflight.com in order to allow other people to test it. But, the app will expire when the certificate expires. You'll need to follow the standard procedure for compiling an iOS app. That first link I sent you, near the bottom of his explanation, gives you the details on how to make it work. Once you compile the app, you submit to the app store and wait for approval. Expect at least a week for that to happen. Android is fortunately much easier. If you follow the instructions in the second link, and use the Release Certificate, it'll create a .apk file that you can store anywhere, and that people can download. All you have to do is link directly to that file. Have you tested your app on actual devices yet? That is extremely important, as sometimes issues that don't show up in the simulator tend to show up on real devices. I would caution against releasing an app that hasn't been tested on a device yet. Thanks Mark for those links, I spoke with Apple earlier today and they confirmed at least a week wait. I'll be reading tonight. One main reason for me asking for help is I've gotten a few warnings when using the simulators that I'm trying to figure out. That's really where I need help. I know that it has to be something simple but I'm not able to figure it out yet. The App works but I still see warning lights. So I figured I could pay someone that's done this to help me through this juncture getting this app ready to submit.

If you can post the exact warnings you are getting, along with the version (iOS or Android), then we can absolutely help you out. Some warnings are OK, and won't affect the app at all. But some need to be dealt with. And keep in mind that it appears Apple doesn't do app reviews over the weekend, so it seems to be business days only.

The iOS one is because you don't have the certificates installed. If you follow the instructions in the first link, that should take care of it. Not entirely sure about the second one.

Mark, I think I owe you a beer or a Coke, if you're like me and not a drinking man. EXCELLENT resources! I was a bit apprehensive about compiling my app in the Android SDK after going through all the trouble learning XCode, but from your link,it looks a lot more straightforward.

Hi @Daniel, Glad the links helped! I think both iOS and Android have their pro's and con's. Apple is harder to get started, but overall I like it a bit better. Android seems to have fewer pitfalls, but sometimes takes a bit longer to get going. And, since I'm not a drinking man either, feel free to send along a Fruit Punch SoBe...my drink of choice! Mark
