iOS BT 1.4 - YouTube videos won't auto-rotate

I added three YouTube videos to my app this morning. As I was testing them, I noticed one of them wouldn't rotate from portrait to landscape as I rotated my iPhone. The other two did. After a few minutes of looking around on the YouTube web site, I went back into my app and found that the other two suddently wouldn't rotate any more. I checked other older YouTube videos in my app that have worked for a few months - they now don't rotate either! I went to m.youtube.com from Safari on my iPhone, and browsed to one of my videos - it will rotate there correctly. I checked my app on a friend's iPhone, and it showed the same issue. It looks like it's trying to rotate into landscape, because the control bar sort of shifts up a bit, but the video won't rotate. My new videos not rotating is one thing, but I find it really odd that other videos in my app that have rotated in the past no longer will, and that on YouTube's mobile site it will work okay. Anyone have any thoughts? Has this happened to you?

Okay, I've done some more testing, and here's what I found: YouTube videos on the Android version of my app will rotate fine (which suggests it's an iOS thing). I also tested on an iPhone running iOS 4 and it worked fine (which suggests that it's an iOS 5 thing). So, considering my earlier observations, the test data suggests that viewing a YouTube video in a BT 1.4 app on a device running iOS 5 will cause the video orientation to stick to portrait, regardless of the device's orientation. Android is OK, iOS 4 is OK, and m.youtube.com via Safari (even on iOS 5) is OK.

Hi peterj, You may very well have stumble upon an issue with v1.4. However, I don't believe we have any plans on updating that version anymore now that v1.5 is out. So you can either try to sleuth out the problem and fix it yourself, or try upgrading to v1.5, where this shouldn't be an issue for iOS. (v1.5 for Android is still in Beta) If you would like to make a v1.5 app, you'll need to join the early adopters list. There is a link to do so in your control panel. After joining, click on the 'Create New App' tab and then the 'Create New v1.5 App' link. I'll check with David tomorrow but I don't think we'll be updating v1.4 anymore. I'll post back if I'm wrong.

Hi Parker - thanks very much for your response! I was a little nervous about upgrading to 1.5 because I wondered what it would do to my existing app, but based on your comment it looks like when I upgrade, I will create a brand new app...does that mean my 1.4 app will still work for my customers until I'm able to publish my 1.5 app? What I was really worried about is upgrading to 1.5, then no one could use my app until I published an update. If my 1.4 app will continue to work, then I think it's a great strategy to upgrade, then just publish an update to the iOS version to fix the rotating video issue. On another note, I discovered last night that if you start viewing the YouTube landing page in landscape, the video will play in landscape, but if you rotate it to portrait it will stick there, so I don't think this is a critical, or even major, issue for my app.

Yes, your v1.4 app will continue to work while you create a v1.5 app. They are two separate things. So you cold finish the v1.5 app and then upload it to the app store as an update to your v1.4 app.
