Videos in Android Apps

I tried a .mov format for an Android App, it worked great in iPhone but it's not working in the Android simulator, what's a more universal Video format that works in both (and in as many versions of Android as possible?) Also i'm guessing that Android devices probably have a much more limited Space Restriction than iPhone so storing videos locally is probably not a good idea (the iPhone version of a video app I did was 142 MB). Thanks for any tips.

Hi Jordash, Search the forum for Video or Android -- there are a couple great posts directly addressing these issues. In summary, you can't assume that the Android simulator plays videos at all...you have to test this on an actual device. Further the video functionality for Android 1.5 isn't really planned until phase 2 release, some time in the near future. Meanwhile if you find any workarounds, I would love to hear about them.

So in 1.5 Video functionality doesn't work at all? Does it work in 1.4 pretty good?

Hi guys, I found this webpage on converting your video to work on both devices: http://chall32.blogspot.com/2011/01/video-for-android-or-iphone.html Hope it helps. I think video screens are supported on v1.5 Android now but you'll have to check. It could be available but just buggy. Phase 2 should smooth it all out.

Good to know thanks. I wish Android would make simulators that displayed video so you can be sure it'll play right.

Hi again Jordash, After fiddling I found the solution to this; it was first posted by Trailman back in August. Very sweet. http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=018573EF7E143A706D6AAC0&status=&searchInput=video&sortColumn=FT.dateStampUTC&sortUpDown=DESC¤tPage=1&doViews=1 Basically you send a video to www.bigsontherun.com which is a free video encoding service. They encode in 2 different formats (small and medium) both of which, I've found, will work in iPHone and Android. Every other solution I've tried has not worked in Android. I tried a zillion video encoders and they all seem to blow up in Android, as I understand it, it's a super technical issue of putting various .MP4 markers at the front or back of the file. Way over my head. The bottom line is, bitsontherun works. --->note to BT folks...there were a few other forum posts from people frustrated with Android videos not working (they worked in browser mode but not in BT). Trailman's solution seems to be the fix. Cheers, Tom

LOL. I just finally read the earlier post from Trailman. Once again I learn to take 1/2 hour to search the forum...before blowing 12 hours trying to find a workaround myself.
