Can't get Eclipse to accept my Android download

I've just spent 4 freakin' hours trying to get this download to work. I've followed all the directions in building my app right up to the point where we get to the download the code part. Nevermind that Buzztouch doesn't bother to tell you that you're not getting Eclipse or the Android Development tools with the download, I guess they figure their always working with tech heads. Well, that's not me, I'm a total novice, but trying to nail it. So, I've downloaded the damn code, I've downloaded and installed Eclipse, AND the ADT app. I get as far as locating existing project, but Eclipse won't accept ANYTHING in the Android folder. Believe me, I've tried every darn file and folder that there and nothing gets me to the point where I can hit the FINISH button. What gives??????

@Cal - I think your criticism of Buzztouch is extremely unfounded. If you read the help page and the docs, they clearly indicate that you need to download and install Eclipse (and Xcode for iOS). They even provide the download links. I know this can be frustrating. A few suggestions to get your app running in Eclipse. I'm assuming you've watched the Buzztouch videos and still are not having any luck. Here's what I do. 1. Create a new project (File->New->Android Project) 2. Give it a name, and select 'Create project from existing source' 3. Click browse and find the folder name of your downloaded project (not a file name, but the folder) 4. Make sure you have the correct Google api selected for your app (1.6 for version 1.4 and 2.2 for version 1.5) 5. Click finish That should be all you need. If you followed the videos, you should have your emulator running. They just click the 'run' icon (on my system it's a green button with white arrow) and the project should compile and run in the emulator.

Hi in D.C. For sure it's frustrating sometimes, especially for non programmers. Beleive me, we get it. We've 'bothered' to try to do all we can to help you get it too but cannot magicaly make it all make sense. My advise would be to watch a few videos (our or anyone elses) and try to get through the Hello World sample app video. See if you can get that working...after that, the video showing how to create a project with your downloaded source-code should make more sense. @MGoBlue: Thanks for the lookout....Cal will figure it out ;-)

Thanks fellas. Didn't mean to come across so, uh, aggressively. But you know the deal, your brain gets fried after 4 or 5 hours of this. Geez. Anyway, MGoBLue, I did do exactly what you said, as were the directions from Buzztouch, but the question is I guess: Which folder? When I unzip the download, it opens up several folders, if I than extract all files in Windows, it creates several more. There is one called src which I took to mean source and that didn't work. I tried each folder, and each file within each folder and nothing seemed to work. I know I'm goofing up somewhere, I just can't figure out where, and as I have stated, I'm a technoramus...................

When you right click the zipped folder you should see an option ''Extract to - and then the name of the buzztouch zip folder'' It might be worded a bit differently depending on your zip utility. Select this and it will create an unzipped folder containing all those other folders you mention. In Eclipse, follow MgoBlue's instructions and select that folder name you just unzipped, no need to open it. Eclipse should select the correct api level, but if not, follow MgoBlue above. Alternatively, it looks like you've selected ''Extract here'' or ''Extract files'', so you've got a load of new files/folders extracted to your pc. That's ok, just put all those files/folders into a new folder, name it what you like, and navigate to that folder in eclipse, again, there is no need to open it. Don't worry, eclipse, adt etc is completely baffling for most of us non-techies to start with, but you'll soon get the hang of it.

Well, thanks for that too. I did try that. I am getting to the point where it asks me to browse for my source file, and I navigate to it, and it seems to load the info in the block below that says something about target or something. BUT, and here's the big BUT, at the top of the Android screen it says must specify SDK target or close to that, and in the console window of eclipse it says unable to read android manifest.html, so I guess theres and error in there somewhere. Also, in MgoBlues directions, he mentions something about a Google API selection: when and where do I do that??

Okay, some new info here: just watched a bunch of videos here at the site and confirmed that I've done everything right, as far as buzztouch is concerned. I guess when I create the source code and download it, something must not be working right. I don't have any choices under target in Eclipse. I don't see anywhere to select Google API 1.6, and apparently it is not downloading with the other buzztouch info about my app. Any suggestions?????????????????

in Eclipse main window go to window>>preferences>>Android and where it says SDK Location hit browse and locate the Android SDK Folder which is usually C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk if you are running windows and you haven't changed the destination folders while installing then hit apply at the bottom of the window you will notice different versions appear thats it hit okay then go back to new project and try again

@Cal Everett: Please try to get away from words like 'something must be wrong with the buzztouch code' and 'I cofirmed that I've done everything right.' - clearly you have NOT done what it takes to get your machine compiling Android apps. It's a process you're working through. Have you successfully compiled the HelloWorld app like we suggested? If you cannot compile / launch the most basic Android app you wont' get anywhere. You're confusing appears to still be related to how Eclipse and the Android SDk work together. Your going to have to figure out a way to understand the relationship between what Eclipse does, what the Android SDK does and how you, the developer, control the Android Libraries you use to build Android apps. Not sure what else to advise?

David, sorry about the way I'm saying things, I didn't mean to intimate that there was anything wrong with the actual buzztouch engind, I was merely suggesting that perhaps my files were corrupted during the download. (that's happened to me on more than one occassion). Nope, on the contrary, your service is awesome, now, if I could must get smart enought to figure it out!

Okay, buds, this just in. thanks to @newnewnew above, I finally got Eclipse to load up my App. Next problem, it's riddled with errors. something about the Java script using too many raw values or list not being parameterized??? And geopoint not being resolved to a point. It has errors and warinings. 100 of 105 errors and 100 of 168 warinings. Now, this is just the straight folder from Buzztouch, downloaded and opened in Eclipse. Full of errors. Am I using the right version of Eclipse?? I'm using what's called the Classic version. Not the one mentioned in the online tutorials. Could this be the issue?

And in yet another update. Got the errors and warnings down to 92 errors and 22 warnings. Of course, Eclipse won't let me do anything with the project until all the errors are fixed. I don't have a clue how to fix them, I don't even know what they are. My question is: Why did the file download and compile with errors?

Alright, I'm startin' to get the hang of this detective work now. It occurs to me that while compiling my app in Eclipse, I am not offered the choice of Google API 1.6, Eclipse automatically selects Android 1.6 as the target. The only Google API that is listed is google API 3.2. I tried using that and the errors dropped from 100 to 92, thats all. So, if I could figure out how to get Google 1.6 as a choice in the preference box, this thing might work. Any suggestions?

Guess what gents!!!!?????? I figured it out, just kept messing around in Eclpise and found a place to install other Google packages, it downloaded the correct 1.6 API and I started my app using that API. Now, it still had multiple errors, but I figured out that if I clicked on the error messages, they would open up with choices of how to correct the errors. Which I did!!! And now, NO errors!! Awesome. Still have to address the warnings, will do that tomorrow, and hopefully launch my first App tomorrow afternoon!! Thanks to all of you for your help,.
