Pull content from a Wordpress site

Hi there Is it possible to connect and pull data from a Wordpress site? If so, has anyone done this before and share some of what is involved? Thanks in advance

What type of data are you trying to pull? The nice thing about wordpress is it creates rss feeds for all the post contents, and you can sort and pull by category id or tag.

You want part of the site or all of it? I brought in my wordpress site into my app and used the wordpress template's iPhone CSS to make it fit nicely in the screen. http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/amazing/id438735841?mt=8&ls=1

There's a pretty flawless free wp plugin called 'Wordpress Mobile Pack' that shows the regular website in a browser and mobile version on a phone, both using the same url. Works fine out of the box and you can really customize it if you know css and php.

Hi I think that perhaps I was not very clear. What I want to do is use buzztouch to create an iphone app that pulls data from wordpress. I don't want to build a mobile version of the site. Actually, @MGoBlue provided the closest answer to my question. Thank you though. M.

@stoneypointe - unless you want to do some specific coding to read the word press database and populate html files within your app, the easiest and best solution is what has been discussed above. By utilizing one of the Wordpress mobile plugins, you will create a mobile optimized website. From a regular browser, nothing would change. But from a mobile browser, or more importantly from a custom url call within your app, the information from your site will appear in your app in a readable and native-looking way. I've got a dozen apps that function this way. Here's an example if you want to have a look: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/conservative-republicans-california/id463185166?mt=8&uo=4 The rss feed links back to articles from the website that are optimized for mobile viewing. Items like the 'about us,' 'bylaws,' etc are actual pages on the website that are optimized for mobile. All integrate seamlessly into the app. Hope this is more helpful.

I did a little google search on this issue and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to access the mysql database directly from within an app. There are a couple potential methods out there but it sounds like they won't be approved by apple. Most of the advice is to build a php routine that access the database. This would be hosted on a server since you can't run php directly on your phone. Here's one discossion: http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/3711-access-mysql-remote-database-iphone.html Seems to me like the best bet is as mentioned above, using some form of mobilization of the website. If you don't control the site, you can always pull the rss feed into a site you do control so you can set up a mobile version. Good luck.

Thanks a lot MGoBlue. This is the type of info I need to pull: http://www.dienerproperties.com/brickell_on_the_river.htm I may have to end up recreating the screens in the BT server. Is that a crazy idea? This is not for a client, just a project for myself. If it was for a client I would use a different repository. Regards M.

Unfortunately, Dienerproperties.com isn't a wordpress site, and I can't find any type of feed. Probably the only option is to manually create the pages. Sorry. Looks like a lot of work.

Hi there Yes that site was just an example, but the content that I need to pull is similar. I will probably have to create the content manually, lot of work, but doable. Thanks for the answer M.

You can pull content from Wordpress via the RSS feed and also with the json API plugin

Hi, I noticed it's been 6 months since the last post .. has any new developments happened that makes wrapping an online Wordpress blog in BuzzTouch and packaging it suitable for sale on the various Apps markets any easier? Is there any major benefit from a Wordpress based App for self hosting a BuzzTouch Server vs using their server? I have several ideas for Apps but a lot of them involve RSS Feeds, so for me it makes sense to use wordpress as the means to pull these feeds together, but I'd like them to display nicely on the phone.

There have been new developments in utilizing WordPress in more then just a RSS feed. To get it working, you have to be a bit of a code monkey (or hire one.) If you're running a WP site, you can install JetPack (if your theme is well built and plays nicely) and activate the JSON API plugin. Here you can call to any/all of the info stored in your database.
