What to charge for app development?

I am a classroom teacher first, aspiring developer second. I am having great success with the apps I have developed (one for my classroom and one for my wife's classroom). My students enjoy using it and their parents like being able to keep up-to-date on what is happening. I now have my district in which I teach and some other local districts asking me to develop for some of their teachers. My question is what is the going rate for app development and maintenance for a business or school? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the best thing to do would be to google companies that build apps for consumers and check their rates. Since it is going to be for other teachers, it'll probably be similar to what you have already created for you and your wife; therefore, it'll take almost no time to build the app. The biggest cost or fee that you would charge would be for the maintenance of the app. Congrats on your success so far!!

Rates vary tremendously -- pretty much anywhere from $500-$5000. It all depends on what you think your time is worth.

Cheack out http://www.freelancer.com/ and see what people are charging for this type of development.

give a man a fish, or teach him to fish, or something like that? What you charge will depend on what you do for them. In almost all cases, it's a matter of how much babysitting you do with your clients data. Maintenance is key (like @Dkeller mentioned). There are lots of folks using this site to earn a pretty good amount of money. Tons in some cases. But again, it depens on what you're providing. Basic, simple, content centric apps (as compared to feature rich, gorgeous, sophisticated) are generally low-cost these days. But, continued services are all over the place in terms of fees. If you enjoy it, and want to help, maybe just ask the teach' next door what they are willing to pay. I'll be you'll help them for close to free ;-)
