AVD - Android Virtual Device - Where Do I Get Them?

Hi, I am new to this, but hope I just have one last hurdle to overcome. I have downloaded and installed the Android SDK (various versions) and Eclipse. I also have installed the android plug-in for Eclipse as well as 3rd party installs (Google). I now have no problem opening Eclipse, choosing my project from the desk top. The project then loads to the left of the screen. 1 select my project, hit the green RUN button and get the error No compatible targets were found. Do you wish to add new android virtual device? When I say YES, it takes me to a screen where no devices are found. I have the option to create a new one, but don't know how to do that. Is there a download for virtual devices that I missed? How do I install them? Thanks.

Makes perfect sense. You create as many AVD's as needed. Android Virtual Devices are simulators. Fancy words for same thing. You create them in a list so you can have a bunch of different simulators for different types of devices. The trick is to create one that is setup to run the same Android operating system verison as your code is setup to run. In this case Google API's. Again, lots of ways to setup simulators. Just be sure to get one running that is running the API version you expect. Not sure if there's a video in the help section about this or not? Maybe have a look at the /help/videos page. You could also see this: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/devices/managing-avds.html You don't need to setup a new simulator for every project. Once they are in your list you can launch them as needed. I generally launch the sim as soon as I start eclipse becuase they take forever to startup. Painfully slow! Or, the better way (I do this all the time too) is to just connect your device to your computer and use it as the testing device. In this case, click the Run As > Android App and a window should open showing your connected device....click your device to install it on that and run. Welcome Aboard!

Hi David, I did find that link as well. But it was confusing to me. Have been reading all over this forum, app inventor forum and another android forum. But I will see if any videos exists. I just created my project yesterday, so I guess the version is 1.6? I'll have to check and make sure about that. Thanks. Patrice

Yup... no worries, it'll make sense soon enough. The verisons are also confusing. There is the buzztouch version and then there is the Android version. You're using buzztouch v1.4, I know this because your avatar in the forum doesn't show Early Adopter. Early Adopter's of buzztouch have access to buzztouch v1.5. No worries there. The Android version you're running on your phone is not necessarily the version your project is coded for. Example: Your phone may be running Android v2.2 and mine may be running 3.0 - there is a difference. But, the project you download will run on Android phones running v1.6 or higher. This is why you need to setup a simulator for v1.6 and compile against the Google API's v1.6 libraries.....so older phones will support your code. So...click the AVD manager, a window will open. Click the Add New button to setup a new emulator. When setting up the emulator, choose Google API's v1.6 from the list.

Hi, The simulator opened, but my icon is no where to be found. I made sure I checked the entire screen. What should I do? Patrice

PS Still get the error NO COMPATIBLE TARGETS FOUND. DO YOU WANT TO ...? I selected yes then selected the newly created simulator and opened. But perhaps I am just opening up the simulator without opening up my project? Patrice
