Best way to include a date counter?

Hi, just joined, little coding experience (some HTML/CSS). Trying this out as a learning experience. I'm looking to add something into an app where: 1. it auto-detects network date without being visible to the user 2. when you click on days since [event name] a counter takes that network date and compares it to a set date in the past, and generates a number For example, let's say I'm making an app with the date of significant events in American history. The user would click on days since Pearl Harbor and the app would switch to the next screen and compare the network date on the phone (Sept 22, 2011) to a fixed date (Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941), and output on the screen 25,491 days since Pearl Harbor. As an added bonus I'd love to figure out how to make it convert the number of days into weeks/months/years below that number, but I'm trying to start simple. So my questions: 1. How to auto-detect network date? 2. Which language should I be using for this? 3. Any pointers/links to examples on how to implement this. Again, just learning. Thanks!
