App market placement

Is it possible to share an app without placing it in the iPhone app store or Android market place? And if it is please tell me how it works. I currently only know how to scan a qr code or send a link via the share app application. It seems to me that because these apps are active on the buzz touch server there must be a way to share these apps without market placement? If anybody has got some insight please let me know. Joe

Well, with android you can place the apk file anywhere you like and link to it, for example upload it to dropbox. So you can link to its url from within your app, or emails or website etc, also pre-fill the twitter and facebook messages in your app with the link and get people sharing it for you!

so let me try to get this right. If I place the .apk file on my server and text message the link to another android device user they will be able to download the app from my server? Is that correct or am I lost in the moment? so our android devices automatically recognize the file format for use?

Thats correct. When you finalize the app it will create a .apk file. You would do that in Eclipse of course. Once that's done anyone can take that and install it via a number of ways..... Dropbox, email attachment.... ADB....

Link directly to the app - http://mywebsite.com/myapp.apk and it will auto download to the device, as long as they have enabled 3rd party downloads on their phone. Here: Menu > Settings > Applications > Tick ''Unknown sources''. So maybe link to a page that has the setting instructions on - or put the instructions in the email - along with a direct download link to the .apk file and you should be good to go.

Is the reason you don't want to put the app on Android the fee? Why I ask is such: If your app is good. People should know that a signed APK file could allow someone to take it and upload it to the market.. Yep this has happend to me. I had a 'bata' game and I was allowing people to download it in bata from my site. Before long I seen it on the Market in Bata form. So just a word of caution :) Yes I got Android to remove it ect.. The good thing with buzztouch is you have final control of the content within!!

I am a developer account it is just a question but primarily I was trying to determine how to do it for iOS developing because of restrictions apple puts on apps. My clients have simple apps that interact with web sites and Apple has somewhat strict app rules against these kinds of apps.
