Interface: Making it look good as possible (Need Tips!)

One of the things that I find my Apps lacking is a very good interface, and I'd love to improve that. Here is the interface of one of my current Apps: http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/7606/iphone1j.png I know it's not bad, but I know I can do much better. I'm currently attempting to convert the interface to a Button-Layout rather than a ListView style. I'm getting nowhere. This is what I've gotten so far: http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/9587/testrg.png (NOTE: I do plan to remove the Bar at the top, and fix the buttons.). As you can see, it looks worst; IMO. Does anybody happen to have any tips, suggestions, or thoughts regarding my issue? I want to create the best interface possible. Thanks

Find some sleek high quality graphics. Stay away from anything too busy. your background is cool, but the icon is a bit overwhelming. Look for clean sleek images. If you can't create them our self, there are a lot of great sources out there. Places like istock.com and bigstockphoto.com have some great art at reasonable pricing. There are free resources too. Check out iconarchive.com. There's a lot of good stuff there too. Good luck and keep working at it. Don't give up.

I actually like the first interface better than the second (aside from the font, which has been done to death on the Internet!). It's much cleaner and not so busy. I agree with @MGoBlue that there are some great stock image resources out there, many for free. Just make sure you have the permissions to include them in a product. I do think that illustrations (vector diagrams) work much better than photos in most cases. Buttons should be clean and clearly depict the information behind them. Remember that most people just want to get to what their looking for, and I do believe that a good interface isn't one that's distracting, but complementary. So, I realize not much real help there. I, too, struggle with graphics...they are very difficult for me. I generally try and find images already done that compliment my design, and try to stitch it all together. Pretty much just try and try again! Mark

You are on the right track Jenny21. Some good comments above, like the background image.
