Formal...Hmmm....how about the soon to be announced buzztouch-U Smile. It's a difficult challenge for sure with loads of opinions and 'angles' to take. Plenty of folks like me that battled through the school of programming hard-knox for years before commiting myself to a formalized education. I recently returned to school to pursue a design degree after years of professional programming. And, there are tons of pedigree and highly educated programmers that dove into theory and math long before they learned to program, let alone earned any money doing it for others. Whats best for you is only known by you. I'm a read-it and study-it and practice-it type learner and thrive on doing it my own way. I break plenty of things along the way but appreciate the process of fixing what I screwed up and improving through the process. I think the biggest challenge with technical training revolves around all the different technologies and hype. In other words, what should I learn first? I approach this with a simple perspective....data - delivery - availabilty. Data's always going to revolve around some sort of database system (relational, flat file, etc) so learning the basics of data management is always useful. Delivery used to be browser (for the last 15 years or so) but is now moving mobile so a basic understanding of how the devices work and how the applications are created seem logical. Availability - where are you going to earn you $? Sales of your own products? Providing services to clients? Working for a large firm? This is tough. Ultimately you'll need to understand what your long term goal is before you can organize a best-approach training plan. An educational pathway for a career-minded future Googler will look much different than a creative entreprenuer - it all depends on the expected and desired outcome ;-) My two cents.
