iAd weirdness

An updated version of my app just went live in the iTunes store. The original version of the app had iAds enabled, and I was earning in a small amount of revenue from the ads that Apple served to the app. However, I noticed something odd in the updated version of the app (which I downloaded from the store and installed on my iPhone) — the Test Advertisement banner shows up in the application rather than an actual ad. Is it possible I'm seeing this because I'm in Japan, and no ads are being served to the app in this country? Or was there something I missed or forgot to do to activate iAds when I uploaded the update to Apple? I presumed that because the ads were enabled and running just fine in the original version of the app, the updated version would display the ads as well (and not the test banner). Should someone want to download and it and take a look at it for me, here's a link to the app (which is free): http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/manga-university-101-how-to/id452236050?mt=8 Cheers, Glenn

Thanks for taking a look at it for me, Stefan. I have a feeling that Apple doesn't place many ads in apps outside the United States. Still, I never saw the Test Advertisement banner show up in the original version of the app (except when testing it in Xcode), so it concerns me that I'm seeing it in the updated version.

I'm not as versed on how iAd works from Apple's perspective as I'de like to be. But...it makes no sense that Apple would EVER insert a test-ad in a published app. Right? I mean really, they are the kings of details, perfection, anti-amatuer. The idea that a test-ad / banner would appear sounds very surprising. I just updated Manga (found the device with the 'update needed' message) and launched it. I FOR SURE see ads. I'm in the US. The How to Draw Bodies screen shows them immediately. Others do delay a bit but eventually produce ads too. Must be a geographic thing. But, the test ad should be figured out - seems bogus.

HI David, Thanks for downloading and teasing it for me. Glad to know that you're seeing the proper ads in the United States. I still see the Test Advertisement banner here in Japan. Guess I shouldn't worry about it, though. Unfortunately, I'm also still getting lots of reports that the app is crashing. One user emailed me, told me he is running iOS 4 on an iPhone 3GS, and is NOT jailbroken. He says he launches the app, gets a black screen and then the app crashes. Weird, because others are reporting it works just fine.

That is weird. Generally they are super reliable once all the details are figured out (as you expereienced during the development process). So, could it be that the person reporting the issues has an older verion? corrupt data in the build they downloaded? Can't remember where it stands. Maybe ask them to remove and re-install to make sure they have the latest release. Crashes are bad for everyone ;-)

@David, One thing. I've been working on some mods on my app that isn't part of BuzzTouch (GameCenter integration), and I followed the tutorial that you have on the site. After I had it successfully integrated I noticed that the iAd banner went away. It only comes back up if I save something on the Buzztouch site. After I do that the app says there is updated content, and after I update it the banner comes back. It is a perpetual problem with something. Is this normal, and if not what is the best course of action to go by when I submit the app to iTunes? Thank you.

I have not used any game center code so I'm not sure why or how it changes the iAds. Because you say that it only comes back after refreshing the apps configuration data, it sounds to me like the configuration data in the Xcode project does not match the most recent configuration data in your control panel. Update the config.txt file in the project so it matches the config data in your control panel, bet it works.

I took a look at the config.txt file in Xcode. Sure enough, for some reason the includeAds=0 instead of 1. I don't know how this got inverted, but problem solved. Thank you David. Just signed up for BT-server. Looks great!! Can't wait to see what this will become. Thank you again.
