Video Suggestions

Hi, working on making an app with video tutorials...trying to take 12 DVD's each run about 1 hour in length...i plan on splitting each dvd into shorter clips so i can make a menu to choose clips...i want to make this for large and small devices...i would really like a totally offline experience but worried about the size of the app with that much video content...do you think it's best to pull the vids from my server and the app will cache each video?.....also, any suggestions on video format and size for both ios and android? will mp4 work for both platforms just fine? thanks for any advice on setting this one up!

Hello ianjamespiano. mp4 format should work for both iPhone and Android. The app will not cache the video. The best is if you put the files on your server and makes the app streaming the movie. To get a sharp movie clip, use 640x480 resolution. It works perfect on Iphone 4. I use Emicsoft Video Converter for Mac to convert to right format.

Thanks Mackimack, that's what I figured, just no way to embed that much video...what is the size limit of an app anyway? Read that 20mb is limit for 3G but with Internet connection maybe more?

It is probably no limit on the size of an app. But is it larger than 20 MB so it must be downloaded over WiFi.

the biggest apps I've seen for iOS would be some of the GPS apps, upwards of 3gb. You could always go half-n-half, where you could include a small clip in the app, and stream the full length video? Or you could offer a web link or FTP link for the user to download your videos from their computer and sync them to their device at their leisure.
