App Store reviewers keep saying my app crashes

Apple approved my application five days ago, and so far it seems to have done fairly well, with about 3,000 downloads so far. But several people have written reviews in which they state the app crashes on their iPod touch. Others have written reviews saying it runs fine. So I'm not sure what's going on. I'm wondering if it's possible that my app is not compatible with the iPod touch. Or, perhaps they are running jailbroken iPods and that's leading to problems. I don't have an iPod touch on which to test it, but the app runs fine on my iPhone. If anyone here would mind trying it on an iPod touch and letting me know their experience, that would be fantastic. The application is free, and is called Manga University 101. Here is a direct link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/manga-university-101-how-to/id452236050?mt=8 Thanks!

Hi in Tokyo: I'll happily test this on an iPod Touch when I get back to the office on Monday. It could be a jailbroken issue or it could be something I'm unaware of. I'll bet you did everything right and there is something about the devices? It's good that you're looking into it, it should 'just work' Hopefully somebody else will test for you before Monday.

HI David, Thanks, I appreciate your willingness to try it on an iPod touch this coming week. My guess is that it's probably an issue with the users' devices (perhaps they have been jailbroken). My app is designed to appeal to teens, who are more likely to experiment with their devices and tweak them in ways that could break otherwise healthy apps. The views stats here on Buizztouch for my app do indicate that it's being looked at by a lot of people, which is reassuring. Cheers, Glenn

Hello, I get this sometimes too in reviews. Got 2 review in the last week for a free app I have published (1.5) Black? - The screen goes black when you click on the app. Not cool bro. Mad!!! - Mine goes black when i use it. I'm now officially super pissed! One person did write in a review: Yay - It's a good app but if it closes when you open it , it means that you don't have data room or too many apps :D But also got more complaining: Huge glitch - Once this app is done downloading and you click it, it just closes Uhhh - Keeps crashing!!! Fix itt!!!! bugs - Almost as soon as I open the app it goes back to the home screen. Please! Fix bugs! Rubbish - It didn't load and just when to my iPod homepage:/ Would't even load - The app wouldn't even open... It goes to the app and then exits to my home screen. Thank god it's free. : / But got 4 nice reviews as well :) Not sure whats happening, I was kind of ignoring the 'didn't work' ones as the app was free so they hadn't lost any money on it. It would be better though if they could open it. Not sure what the issue is as it obviously worked if it got though Apple QA. Any time people who have bought paid apps have emailed me, usually just askin them to hit the 'refresh' button solves any issues. thanks! Elaine.

As a wee aside, although Jailbroken phones should in theory work just as every other phone does, they don't. I've had issues running apps on jailbroken iPhone on 4.3.3 when others run the app fine on non-jailbroken devices. @ manga_university Don't have a Touch at home, but do at work, not promising anything but will try and drop your app on it today. To echo David though, someone else might jump in and oblige. @elaine - Had a similar review last week, guy complained about the upload feature not working and said the app needed an update. He still gave it 4 stars and said he loved it though. Mad world!

Thanks for the additional comments everyone. I really appreciate it. The app did get a few glowing reviews, and the ones on the UK App Store were overwhelmingly positive. Maybe I should chalk it up to a bunch of disgruntled teens who are upset because my little app doesn't deliver them fame, fortune and an endless summer vacation :-) Seriously, though, I really do need to make sure the app isn't crashing frequently. Even though it's a free app, it is also a reflection of my company, and I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression about us.

Side note: Does anyone know how we can check to see if an app is running on a Jailbroken device? I have done ZERO research on this but figured we could save some bogus reviews if we could somehow warn folks that their Jailbroken toy isn't going to work? I have no experience with Jailbroken gadgets, maybe I should hack one?

The problem with apps running on jailbroken devices is that there are too many variables. For instance, I use a jailbroken (and unlocked) iPhone when I'm traveling in the States, but other than the unlock, I keep it relatively clean — I don't change the springboard or otherwise try to customize the thing. Other folks, though, really go to town on their devices, giving them all-new looks and lots of tweaks, etc. So, the behavior of an otherwise healthy app on my jailbroken iPhone may be completely different than how it behaves on a heavily modified phone. In any case, I doubt it's possible to really stop folks from posting a negative review of an app that in fact works just fine. Some people just want to attack anything they can. My main concern (and the reason I started this thread) is that my app may actually be crashing on non-jailbroken devices. If that's the case, I want to fix it so folks can download and enjoy it.

Couldn't agree more, if it crashes on a normal gadget you'll want to figure it out and fix it. The best advise I think will be to test it on all the devices listed in your sim. I'll be at office today with iPod Touch and will test that and all the other hardeware we have after getting ur app from App Store. I'll post some results.

Thanks, David. If I don't reply to your post right away, it will simply be because of the time difference. It's currently midnight here in Japan — I should have gone offline hours ago! Have a pleasant day!

Hi David, Just wondering if you were able to test my app on the iPod touch in your office? If not, no worries. But if you did, I'd love to hear the results. Best, Glenn

My phone, like is stated above, is jailbroken solely for the purpose of being free from AT&T but several of my apps (not Buzztouch) seem to crash more often than they used to. They shouldn't but they do. Hootsuite and Google voice being the main culprits. Had a few upload issues with BT apps - again though it shouldn't - when I was on 4.3.3 but that all stopped when I jumped up. tested next to identical phone that wasn't jb'd with no issues. So...... In my experience the JB community aren't really an issue for us, they have to expect issues. People will always leave bad reviews, as the scorpion said to the frog, it's my nature.
