It's not a complicated process and only requires a simple Google registration process. To your question, if you don't want to use the App Market for distribution you can use your website. Eclipse outputs a file, an .apk file that is installable by android devices. a) Compile with Eclipse b) Export .apk c) Park the .apk on your website d) Browse to the .apk with the android devices native browser e) app installs.
