iAds Vs Paid ($.99) App: What makes the most profit?

Although this question has been asked numerous times throughout the internet, I'd love to hear BuzzTouch user's opinion on the topic. Do you make the most profit with iAds, or making a paid App (or both)? For me, I've made about the same profit. Over the past two weeks, my free app with iAds has made a total of $50 Over the past month and a half, my paid app has made a total of $100. But my free app is much more popular. What do you guys think?

Long Run: iAds. Quick Cash: 99 cents. Apps are most popular when they first come out, but free apps will always have a steady download stream.

Pop a link to your app Jenny, does it have anything to do with the Bluegrass?

$50 in two weeks sounds a lot better compared to the $100 in over a month, esp since the free app will continue to generate income. How many downloads does your free app have? I have an update to my free app with iAds enabled waiting for review right now. I think there were about 1000 people who downloaded the last update (few weeks ago) and I continually get about 20-30 new downloads a day. Excited to see if I make any money off the ads or not. Whats the name of your app? I'll click on some ads for ya!

The app is Hilarious FaceBook Status Updates Warning: it's terrible, I made it in two hours. I released an update about 3-5 days ago (it's in review) P.S: if anyone needs help with their app just ask me. I'm a natural at marketing.

Thanks, MacApple! Haha! I actually made it just to see how much iAds can make! The results were surprising, I never thought I would of gotten into top 100 on social Networking, that's for sure! I'm working on a lot more apps now. Also, I live further south, around Danville.

Hey Racer X, BuzzTouch V1.5 has iAd support built-in. iAds are basically Apple's way of advertising (notice the i). You can enable iAds under the Advertising Options tab in V1.5's control panel of most objects. Kinda hard to explain what I mean, but you'll understand once you find it. If you need any more help, or have any more questions, feel free to post them here and I will do my best to support you!

Thanks Jenny21. Very interesting. Ok, I see that option. So do you have to get a specific advertising partner(s), or does Apple fill-in advertisers into the spot you create within your App? I guess I am wondering if I would have strike up a deal with advertisers or does Apple do all that? Also, how much does it pay when a person clicks on the ad?

Apple automatically fills-in advertisers. In other words, you don't have to do anything but agree to iAd's TOS, enable iAd for your app in iTunes Connect, and enable iAd in BuzzTouch to make profit. Also, it's completely random. It's not great, but as scottfits mentioned, it's cash over-time.

Jenny, That is actually a very good fill rate and good revenue for that many impressions. eCPM of around $2 are the higher ends of eCPMs for any network. iAds are a good source of steady income but works best if used with a secondary network to fall upon when iAds are not available . Not trying to be a smartass at all, but its against apple's TOS to publicly share your iAD statistics. They are not too strict on implementing it, but it is grounds for disabling your iAd account if they catch with of it. Just wanted to let you know in case you did not. Wouldn't want your hard earned cash to be taken away by apple. Nice Job on the Facebook app btw! looking forward to the update :)

koirbiku, Thanks for your input. I have removed my iAd statistics. I know that I could probably get away with it, but I always respect companies TOS. How do I go with backing up iAd with a secondary network? Also, what secondary network would you recommend? I've read AdMob isn't too great.

I use an ad mediation system called burstly ( but there are others like mobclix, adwhirl,mocean..) on my non Buzztouch apps. There will be a small amount of coding to be done after you download the SDK though. However, I have not published a single buzztouch app and not exactly sure how well these services would work. My guess is it shouldnt be a problem. I might take a shot at it this weekend, and will be glad to share if it works. As for the best ad network to use, it depends on specific apps, and where the app is getting most of its traffic from. On most of my apps, I used iAd as the primary ad provider, then Millennial media as second, and send anything that does not get filled by either to admob. The beauty of these mediation systems are that you can change what ad networks you want to use, or in what order through their website and saves you the hassle of having to update your app everytime you change ad networks.
