Maps (New Topic for me)

I was wondering if there is a way to get the maps to show the location of the user while on a hiking trail. What happens now is that I just get a map of the trail that's been tracked. If I want to see where I am on the trail I have to exit my map in the app. Open Maps on my Droid X, then it shows exactly where I am on the trail from the satellite view. I'm using version 1.4. This would be a handy feature for those of us who get lost in the wilderness from time to time. ;-) (everything is a metaphor for app building these days) Is this something that could be added to my app by a programmer or is this not possible at all with google maps and v1.4? Thanks, Bruce

I have no idea about version 1.4. But it's certainly possible in v 1.5 though... maybe it's coming soon for the droid??

David is hoping for a mid-June arrival. I would say set your sights on the first or second weeks of July, if an Andy project is mission critical. Just my opinion, I have no knowledge of where the Android dev is at.

@trailman: you or a programmer could add anything you want to your app, thats kind of the whole idea of giving you the source-code. There are sooooo many ways to imagine doing it and it's tough to advise the best way. I would probably start by: a) Copying the location map .java file and calling something else (so you can start with something) b) Adjust the source to load this new file instead of the exisitng file c) Explore ways to show the users location on this exisitng map. A java programmer should be able to do this for you without too much trouble.

I live pretty far from civilization. Where's the best place to find a java programmer online? Vcoder?

Vcoder's good, so is Elance and a few others. The trick with these sites is to be 100% detailed in your request. Coding skills isn't too tough to find but you'll be ultimately responsible for the outcome. In other words, Project Management is key and you'll need to take the lead in this.
