How to sign apple app - Got latest version of Xcode & iOS working but...

Hello and thank you for all your help in advance! :) Okay so I went to Best Buy and purchased the latest version of Snow Leopard 10.6 and got it installed and working! Yea!! Then I did the updates which brought me to 10.6.7 so my iMac OS is totally up to date and ready. I then installed the latest version of Xcode 4 and the iPhone SDK iOS 4.x It all appears to be working because I downloaded the Apple source code from Buzztouch and double clicked the Xcode project file and it automatically opened in Xcode. Now my problem is how do I sign the app? I've tried locating this info myself in the forum but keep finding stuff related to creating a Distribution Profile then editing the Project/Build settings to reflect the right Project and Targets. I DID pay the $99 and finally got approved for my iOS Developer status and have that info now but how and where do I enter that so that I can sign my Apple apps. The Automatic Profile Selector (recommended) option is grayed out. I've watched all the videos and have gone through searches on the forum. I feel terrible asking but getting frustrated a bit because I feel like it's right under my nose. My apologies if this has been answered on another thread but I can't seem to locate that thread. I wish there was a PDF somewhere or video that walked us through this portion of the process so I wouldn't have to trouble my fellow community members with this. I just really want to compile my iPhone app so that I can try it out on my actual physical iPhone rather than the simulator. My app did run fine on the simulator but that's as far as I can get. Been at this since Friday. :( Thanks for your help and attention on this. J

Forgot to add that part of my problem is the latest versions of everything seem to look very different from what I can locate outside this site. I DO have my Individual ID from my Apple Developer's license which was just approved. Going there now to see if I can locate any more info on that then will head over to the Xcode site.

Go to the iOS Provisioning Portal to create your certificates, appID's, register your device and development/distribution profiles. they have some good videos and documentation there.

YEEEEEE HAW! Alright Everest11 that freaking helped! I got to finally build successfully. What a pain in the butt process compared to the Android way of doing things but still happy!!! :) So the app is on my iPhone... COOL! Now WHERE is the actual app so I can upload it to my web site for others to test? Xcode had a successful build and successfully installed it on my iPhone but now where is the app on my iMac so I can test it on other devices like a download from a web site? I apologize for the question but don't know other than on my testing device where the app ended up. Like with the Android app there is an .apk file that I upload to my site so looking for the actual compiled iPhone app OR is this only distributable via the App store? Thanks!!!

That, my friends, is one of the most confusing parts of the whole process IMHO.

Apple apps are only distributed in two ways: a) The App Store b) By using something Apple calls 'Ad Hoc Distribution' This is a techie term that means 'Enter up to 100 top secret device id's in your apple developer portal, jump through 33 hoops, then 21 more hoops with fire around the edges. Next, drag all your buddies phones into the same room (yes, you have to buy the plane tickets) so you can connect a white-cable-wire thing from the sixties from your several thousand dollar computer to your several hundred dollar phone (that's on loan to you from Apple and AT / T) then wait a few moments. While your waiting, be sure to face Cupertiono California while sitting criss-cross-apple-sauce so the Apple gods know you mean business. It just may work. Steve and Company control all iOS software distribution channels. You cannot 'download' your software from your website. You can only install it using the ad-hoc methods listed in your Apple Developer Panel (up to 100 devices) or through the app store. You can easily put the software on your phone with Xcode (connect your phone, choose in device list) but it's a pain to get it on others phones.

That's why I say David... you are the man friend. Thank you for posting this as I have PAINFULLY found this out since originally starting this thread. I am playign with testflightapp.com to see if that will soften the painful process but you are 1,000% right! The Ad Hoc Distribution method is a freaking pain! Looks like I'm going to have to go the other route, App store, if I want to leverage iPhone apps. Thank you though for contributing. I appreciate you. J.
