Favorite Sources for Icons, Logos, Header Images

What source do you use for graphics (I've looked at most of the top sites, but always interested in knowing what others are using). What are your sources for: - logos for app icons - Images for app headers, splash screens, icons - apps for designing your own - favorite designers on Fiverr.com Let's share :-) And thanks in advance! Steve

One of the best investments I've made is Medialoot.com. Really nice and affordable stuff.

Icon Slayer generates all the icon sizes you need for iOS and Android apps. Load your artwork into Icon Slayer, choose your options, then export for a tidy collection "ready to go" into your development environment. http://www.gieson.com/Library/projects/utilities/icon_slayer/#.UUAMXyy9KK0 iPhone Tab Bar and Toolbar Icons Designed for iOS App Developers http://www.iconbeast.com/ Prepo allows you to put the finishing touches on your iconography and Retina artwork before you submit your app for review. Once you import your image files, Prepo will size the icons for an iPad, iPhone or a universal app. On the artwork side of things, Prepo takes your @2x artwork and reduces it to @1x. It also resizes it and renames it if necessary. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prepo/id476533227?mt=12 How to make tab bar icons http://greenerpastures.dk/blog/iphone-udvikling/how-to-make-tab-bar-icons Galuca is a special project to develop FREE high-quality, high-resolution icons for iOS, Android and Windows Phone apps. http://galuca.com/ Medical Tab Bar Icons for iPhone http://www.aha-soft.com/stock-icons/medical-tab-bar-iphone-icons.htm Retina Display Icon Set http://blog.twg.ca/2010/11/retina-display-icon-set/twg_retina_icons/

@Niraj. Nice list. Thanks. One question (probably a dumb one since I'm not a designer and don't use Photoshop - yet): why are the icon sets black & white? :-) I want vibrant candy-color ones :-) By the way, do you use Photoshop? I've been trying to avoid the cost of buying Photoshop but it seems everything useful is a .psd with layers, which is not readily editable in GIMP (doesn't always like the Photoshop layers). Cheers

@andydahl. Pricing seems a bit steep for Medialoot.com doesn't it, unless I'm not looking at it right :-) 5 downloads per month for $9/month? What's considered a download? One image or a set of images? Cheers

I avoid Photoshop by using Pixelmator. I also use Inkscape, which opens illustrator files. Both worth a look at...

I don't use photoshop nor Illustrator, which means I avoid those files. It also means I have friends who are skilled in those apps. :-) Pixelmator is loved by my teenage son, I rely on him at times. Having grown up on the easy-to-use MacDraw, I am a simple vector person. The black white icons are for the Tabbar icons. They are also used on the titlebar by many apps. The colorful icons have their place when used judiciously. Make sure they have a unified look. Then the appropriate usage would be on the opening screen when the icons are laid out as a grid. Also, they can be used on Menus as the icon for each menu item (row). -- Niraj

@LevensGardner. How do Pixelmator and Inkscape handle Photoshop layers in .psd files? Or do you just avoid .psd files :-) GIMP doesn't handle layers in Photoshop files very well. Cheers

@Niraj. Thanks :-) So, do you still use .psd files? There are some nice templates available but only in .psd format. Do you just convert them to some other format? MacDraw? Jeese...that came out in 1984, and morphed into ClarisDraw in 1993. So, I assume you also use Pixelmator...sounds like Terminator...I'll be bak! :-) Cheers

I usually just start fresh in Pixelmator and make the layers there. I have just downloaded a psd sample file and imported it into Pixelmator to test- all the layers are there OK and can be manipulated... I use Inkscape as a free way of opening and adjusting illustrator .ai files. I then export them out as something I can use in Pixelmator. Hope this helps. (Niraj has it nailed with the icon sources.)

@Frogman, let me know if you find the link :-) I did a search and found some random inks to some sites, but I was hoping for a more comprehensive list of what people use and like. Cheers. @LevensGardner. Thanks for testing out the .psd import. Sounds promising. Looks like Pixelmator is on sale for $14.99 right now, so I might grab it :-) The following looks like a nice list of free icon sets: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/webapp-design-resources/

@LevensGardner. When you say you were able to manipulate the layers, did you actually try to change some existing text in a layer? I installed the trial version of Pixelmator but not sure if you have to do some magic to actually apply changes...it didn't work for me :-) Cheers

Send me your psd example for me to try in Pixelmator. chris(dot)crowder(at)mac(dot)com You might have found a snag with text... sometimes it seems with these image editors, when you have finished editing the text, its changed to an image for easier manipulation and saving/export. We need a volunteer with photoshop to try the same file and do some comparisons...

@BuzzingSteve - you hardly can be the bug discovering guy, because it is me... whatever I touch, I gets wrong: software bugs, batteries for a flashligt, insurance, car, employers, etc. I do not give up though. There are bugs everywhere! Let them work for us. Annandale Apps was looking for sources of useful stuff. If I find it, I will post it. Cheers! Frogman

The best way to use MediaLoot.com is their annual memberships. For $159, you get 420 downloads. A small investment to really make your app look professional.
