Image Sizes and Types - Looking for list of all for my Screens

Hi all, Done quite a bit of work on my app both online and offline. Looking to get to grips with image sizes and types. For example, I scanned in a pic of my Uploading icon - this is stated as a jpeg and 72 x 72 Pixels. Now, my scanner wouldn't resize to 72 x 72!! And when I took it as low as possible - the image couldn't be viewed!! (it was so small) So, have I got something wrong about pixels and resolution? Does the Buzztouch Uploader deal with all of these issues, or do I need to do quite a bit of homework and fine tuning before I select my images for placement into BT?

Dennis, Try checking this out. http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/userexperience/conceptual/mobilehig/IconsImages/IconsImages.html I find the best practice is to have a large icon, (at least 114 x 114 and 326 dpi for the iPhone 4) then resize it to the additional sizes and then delete the images BT puts into the images Folder and put your new versions in with the same names so BT recognizes them. They will be higher quality. Also, don't forget you need a large icon for Apples store (512 x 512 72 dpi) If you need any assistance, just ask or tell me if I misread your question.

Hi there, Erichopf, Thanks for speedy reply. I am going to load all of my images on some server space that I hire for website stuff etc. I don't think you have misread anything - you just don't know how naive I am! OK when I read some text in the BT help - I can see that some images can be .png while others can be .jpeg - so knowing exactly what is applicable for what is something I'm still finding out. The BT text suggested an upload icon of 72x72 pixels - I couldn't get down that small and when I got close to that - I couldn't see it. Now - this 512 x 512 image surprises me because it's the first I have heard of it. Im putting together a quiz with say 50 question bank x 16 sections - I wanted to spend today sorting my images out for each quiz - I was making the image pointer for question 1 on each section, the same - same for question 2 etc etc (I should rotate them but I dont need to since BT will randomise the questions in any quiz). So, for example for my quiz images - do I make them .png or .jpeg? Do I load a couple up to see what they look like? (or do we know the screen dimensions already and so is there a standard size for a quiz background image? And finally, if I scan in a large image - does BT decide it's too large and does it let me choose a section of the image until it fits? I know Im asking some searching questions but Im on vacation right now and I want to spend it wisely in getting all the correct sized images for my app. Thanks for the link - Ill take a look - sorry to labour this point, I feel I'm taking up a lot of your time, by asking cheers Dennis

Never a worry Dennis. Usually I am on Skype (same user name), if yon need more help. If I don't respond, I'm busy with my daughter. If can help, I will try and steer you in the right direction. If you can, message me and send me a link from dropbox or something of the like. I will look at it. Probably, you have a high dpi image. I can easily resize it for you if you need. Also, make sure the formate are either .png or .jpg, the .jpeg sometimes might cause a problem. The advantage of the png file is that it can be saved for the web, so it will be a smaller file size. Also, you can have it on a transparent layer, so that you can have a smaller image (I think the image still needs to be 320 x 70 or something along those lines,) and no background conflicts with your theme and the button.

Download GIMP for free. You can edit & resize images as needed.

Hi Erichopf, I checked the link out for images / sizes. I thought 72 x 72 was small - but there is smaller than this to cater for. Am I not understanding pixels and dpi etc? Should I be zooming in so I can see something or is my scanning software just too crude? Do you recommend a good software package? I have to say I'm a little unnerved by the image aspect of BT! For the record, I re-registered for skype - I'm dennisjames01

Fantastic and wholly helpful reply from you both- Thank you very much. So, if I have a higher dpi then 72 x 72 pixels could be almost invisible - so could you recommend a useful dpi? cheers Dennis

Well Dennis, the best solution is to resize and rename your images as they are in the BT_Images folder in your project. Delete the originals and import the versions you created into the project through Xcode. You will see versions Icon_57.png, Icon_72.png and Icon_114.png.
