App Marketing Tips?

I have 2 Apps in the store - and, yes, I've sold some in the past 2 weeks. I'd like a strategy to sell more. I developed a website, a facebook page, a YouTube video, and even got a front page article in our local paper. . .but I'm sure there are simple tricks I'm missing. My premier iPhone app is Search4 - an app designed for law enforcement to learn about the law of search and seizure. It's listed for $4.99. (My other app, which I just rewrote in ver1.5 is the Ohio Rules of Evidence app. The 1.4 version has sold a few, but the search feature that's coming out will really help. The ver. 1.5 is waiting approval). Any advice?

Wish I had a secret for ya because these apps are soooo cool. Off the top of my head: Traditional marketing ideas (offline and online) work wonders sometimes. -Maybe give it away to certain agencies to try to get the word out? -Super fresh content, finely currated works well and brings users back -Maybe a screen with a 'video of the week' or 'funny stories from the field' that update often? -Crazy, funny, amazing law stories or topics? -User generated content, allow folks to send in pics of funny searches? -Promotions - ON SALE NOW works really well I hear Was 4.99 now 3.99 for next 100 downloads -Branded / White label versions. You could offer a service and make an agency their 'custom version' for a few hundred / thousand dollars. Lots and lots of this 'app dev' going on. I'll post more if I think of it: Do you have a link to the article? It would be neat to read.

You might try a small, targeted advertising campaign on AdMob.

DPinoh, Also try contacting moderators and posting on Law Enforcement forums, Contact dealnews and they might list it if you do a 1.99-2.99 limited time offer, adn there are a bunch of dedicated app websites. Try this list, it's a good start. http://mobileorchard.com/9-places-to-publicize-your-iphone-app/

Thanks, all. I've submitted my app for review to a site that lists other police-type apps. David, I did have a inquiry about creating a custom branded app, but I'm not sure how I'd restrict the distribution on the app store. I'm not sure how to receive user generated content, but the idea is intriguing. Off to check out AdMob. Here is a link to the news story, but the full story isn't online (sad face): http://www.marysvillejt.com/web/index.php?sid=50&id=11662

I teach some classes in Internet Marketing and was a marketing manager for HP DEC and Pinkerton. Here are some basics to start: Target your audience - you've got that part down. Law enforcement in Ohio. But also think about others who could use your app. Professional Investigators? Uniform Officer Companies? Private security forces such as hospitals and others who have to write up incident reports and handle evidence. Join groups on social networks that have those targeted market people. Each social network has it's slant. LinkedIn might be good as many career law enforcement peoe use that more than others. If your audience wereon twitter or facebook or another one look for those. Participate in the groups but DO NOT SELL! People will listen to content of real value. Eventually you can mention your app as you build credibility. Make sure people who visit your app web page can reach you for questions and subscribe to an email list for updates. I am amazed in my classes on iPhones and iPods that people don't know how to get apps. Android users are a little more adept because apple users include a wider age range and often get an apple device as a gift. Find publications and journals who might be interested in writing a review of you app. Apps are interesting for articles and a local law enforcement newsletter might review it. Get a selected number of app testers and give them the app for feedback. If you have a good app, all you need is a few good users who will show it to their friends. Word of mouth is the most common way peoe learn about new apps outside of being featured by Apple or getting a review. Hope this helps you get started.
