Problems with setting up eclipse and android sdk.

HI EVERYONE :-) I have been trying to get started with buzztouch and eclipse. Buzztouch is brilliant no problem what so every its the eclipse that i am have some problems with. I have downloaded jdk1.6.0_24 and jre6 and installed them into my programs folder. no problems there. I have also downloaded android-sdk and I have put that on in my desktop and that also works ok. I have installed eclipse-java-helios-SR2 in my programs folder works perfectly , well I think it deos. I have installed my android sdk into eclipse via clicking on window and then preffereces and directed my eclipse to my android sdk and every thing works perfectly I think I then started with the hello world app so that I could get used to the way eclipse works After many trys at the hello world I have finally got this to work. The next step was to download my buzztouch app that I have built which I did and I unzipped it to a document file and saved it. I then opened up eclipse and I Created a new project. File > New > Android Project Enter a project name Choose Create a project from existing source Using the Browse button, I located the source-code folder for my application. which loaded onto eclipse but it has 113 errors and 165 warnings. So I cannot run this app and I am not sure what I should do about all the errors. If at all possible please give me some basic information on how I correct theses errors as I think that when the buzztouch app I built should open and run with out the errors. So I think I have done some thing wrong in the eclipse or android sdk set up. My working enviroment is windows vista I have 150 gigabits free hard drive space and plenty memory. Thank you for any advice.

Hi in the UK: This type of post is very very common. Eclipse is notoriously difficult to get configured and sometimes no amount of videos helps! Laughing. Whatever the issue is, it's gonna be easy to fix. The hard part is identifying the trouble and how your machine is configured. Most times (the vast majority of times) it's an issue of you trying to build the project against the wrong Android API. Q: When you 'Create from source' do the Google 1.6 API's get automatically checked? Your machine will need to have the Google 1.6 api's installed, this is different than the Android 1.6 apis. When the 'Create From Source' the lower portion of the new project window should show a long list of packages availalbe on your machine and the Google 1.6 API's should automatically select for you. If this is not happening, it's our problem and we'll need to get the Google 1.6 API's installed on your machine.

Thankyou for your quick reply, When I first create a project theres the usual new project window appears and I input a project name and then when using my buzztouch app download I click the create project from exsisting source then I browse for the folder where it is stored but in the Target (SDK Target) android 1.6 and google 1.6 API are there in the list but they do not automatically check in the google 1.6 API check box. Hope this Info helps a little bit more. Once again thankyou I no you are a busy man because I have read so many of your helpful tips. :-)

This is strange, I'm not sure why the Google 1.6 API's would not be automatically checked - havn't heard this before. Have you tried to just select the Google 1.6 checkbox and continue? The video we made show what this looks like. I would also check... When you built the Hello World app, did you also base this on Google v1.6 API's? If you did, they must be installed meaning you could just check the box yourself? Kinda lost here.

Thanks again for your quick reply :-), I have uninstalled my eclipse helios and tried again but still having same trouble :-(. I have followed the installation instruction given by developer.android.com and I have started a new project, File-new-android project and filled in all the New Android Project information, Project Name-Create project from exsisting source which I have done correctly :-) but this time the automatic Build Target automaticly check boxes the android API 1.6 not the google API 1.6. When I built the Hello World app I followed the instructions given on http://androidcodemonkey.blogspot.com/2010/01/hello-world-your-first-android.html (sorry for the http://) and built it to run on android 2.1 API but I will give it a go using google 1.6 API. I have tried selecting google 1.6 API when I have open a new project for my buzztouch app but it still gives me lots of errors and warnings. Its got my confused.

Hi once again :-) , Well I think I have it beat now . I have eclipse installed on my laptop and my home computer and was having the same trouble with eclipse on my home computer :-(. I went threw the set up steps to make sure that i had done every thing correctly and in the process I checked my Path in computer - advanced - Environment variables - Path that's when I noticed a small error, Libraries\:C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_24\bin\; the little mistake was :C: when it should have been ;C: I changed the : for ; and that seems to have done the trick its load onto my eclipse with new project and google API google inc platform 1.6 API level 4. Which I think is the correct API . I have tried to run it on the emulator but it was taking a lot of time nearly 30 minutes so Theres another problem I have to figure out :-) Thankyou for your help with this matter :-) .

Cant explain why when I first set my new project up and put the correct info in the new project window I pressed finish and the buzztouch app loaded with no errors. I am really stumped now :-(.

Marathon Eclipse / Android / SDK / Emulator problems ;-) I'm not sure at all what you have going on but do feel for ya. Your enthusiasm and wililngness to fight with your computer is awesome. However, everyone has to give up at somepoint and we need to figure this out before you curse at your machine for the last time. I realize you've spent hours and hours trying to get this done. I'm 100% convinced that something really really simple is going on that we just don't see or realize. So many thousands of folks have done this without any trouble. For sure some folks to struggle but the large majority don't. It takes some basic understanding of software, computers, etc. Do this: Look at this 'Eclipse Installation Details' screen on the buzztouch facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/buzztouch/195311247494 Then look at your eclipse details screen. To get to this screen, launch Eclpise then 'About' from the main menu. Be sure to click 'more' or 'details' or whatever to show the exact screen you see on the facebook page. The image on facebook shows the Android SDK and some Blackberry components installed. What's your show?

Hi and thankyou for your quick reply , I have been trying different things to get my buzztouch app source to work and I tried this; Select Run > Debug configuration > this brings up a Create Manage and configuation window. Then In the project type list on the left, I right-clicked Android Application and selected New and enter a name in the name section (New_configuration is shown I changed mine to New_search) and then on the Android tab, I browse for the my buzztouch app folder which was search people I highlighted that and pressed ok On the Emulator tab, I set the desired emulator (google 1.6 )and then I pressed Apply and then debug. This launched my Emulator and by a miricale of science there was my buzztouch app I made still do not no why this has happed but What I am thinking is that I have debugged the emulator part of eclipse but the errors are still there shown on my eclipse. Every thing on my buzztouch app worked there was only 3 pages and a picture I could get into the pages and see the picture. Every thing looks fine with it. What I am still a little unsure of is if I build another app with buzztouch and then use eclipse and then hopefully publish my apps will there be problems on a actual android phone (due to the errors shown on my eclipse ) What I am thinking is that if it works on my google 1.6 api then it should actually work on a real android mobile device. I will take a look at your advice on buzztouch facebook page tomorrow and get back to you . My girlfriend will kill me if I stay on this laptop any longer :-). Thanks again for your advice.

After three days got my buzztouch app to run in eclipse. The buzztouch guys are right, the Android development environment takes a lot to setup. I finally decided to get help and buy the Android Application Development for Dummies book which has a good section on setting up Eclipse, Java, and the Android SDK. It also guides you through running the Hello Android app from the Dummies web site. Once you can run Hello Android you know your environment is setup OK and it helped me a lot. I downloaded a new copy of my app, saved it in a new directory location and this helped also. I wish I had run Hello Android first though, it would have saved me two days. The buzztouch app started to run with that pretty black text in the console instead of the nasty red error stuff and the simulator started and ran. Download ALL plugins from the Android SDK, this helped solve a major problem for me when it didn't run. I recommend this approach for anyone new to Eclipse. With the $12 Kindle copy of the book.
