Possible to add video file (i.e. not streaming) to app?

I'm thinking ahead to features I think will be useful for my apps. I'm not sure if I'm missing something in the current features (I'm on v1.5), but is it possible to include a video file as part of the app, i.e. not one that streams from somewhere else, but downloaded and native to the app itself, so that it could be played without wi-fi or 3G? Ideally, I'd want a page off the main menu from which a video file can be launched. If this is currently possible, could someone point me in the right direction as to how to accomplish this? If it's not possible, could this be added as a feature request? I think this would be incredibly useful as an option for for maintaining high quality playback. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Dan

Yes, it's possible. You just choose the streaming video option as you mentioned but then instead of putting a url you put the name of the local file in your project. Just make sure you put the file in the BT_video folder and add it to your project then good to go!

@Dan: Yes, this is a wonderful way to go and the quality and experience is much better when the app has the video included. However.. be mindful of the file-size of the videos you compile in the project. If the project exceeds 10mb (or about there) the end user will need Wi-Fi to download the app from the App Store. This may or may not matter... just food for thought.

Thanks for the fast replies. Wow, so it's already there. So basically the file is compiled with the rest of the code for the app from the video folder?? (I'm still a bit new at the technical side, still doing pre-Buzztouch designs.) So this could be an amazing way for indie film/show producers to make their work available via iTunes, rather than go the more formal iTunes TV Show or Movie submission route - which I've read is near impossible to achieve for an indie, unless you want to pay for an 'intermediary' service, which can work out expensive. Great stuff!! @David: Re file sizes, do you know off-hand if large file sizes are automatically refused download via 3G, is a warning given on the iPhone, or is it just problematic? A full feature at a decent quality would be ~700MB. Also, OT, is Buzztouch for iPad still on the roadmap? Thanks again for the help. Dan

Last one first: v1.5 is awesome on iPad. It's a universal app and works well on both platforms. The 10mb App-Download limit without WiFi seems to be set in iOS. All the carriers show the same message, all over the world, so it must be an Apple thing. 700mb films. You do NOT want to try to include these in your project before submitting to Apple. This is an extremely large file. If you have full-length films, you'll be best served by parking them on your server and streaming via the URL. However... you can combine these ideas and maybe include short trailers in the project (that play without downloading) then stream the full length films. Must an idea?

Hello folks, I am thinking of putting a few videos in a new 1.5 app, and have some questions, if anyone has gone through this before :) 1. My app will be iphone & ipad ideally. So I guess the video will need to be setup to play well on ipad. Should the video screen size be 1024/576 pixels? 2. I'll try .mov & .mpv4 formats and see how I go. 3. In terms of quality, would there be any compression formats etc you'd recommend? 4. File size - I'll keep an eye on the 10MB and try to keep the size vaguely reasonable. Thanks! Elaine.

I wish I knew more about video compression and dimensions....I suck at videos! Lets give this a few days and see what happens? If nobody helps, we'll (you and I) need to do some experimenting.

Hello guys! This thread is exactly what I was looking for, as I'm trying to add a video file to my project, instead of a link to an streaming video. Mutzy mentions all I have to do is to point to the local file (using it's name intead of the URL in the online form), put the file in the BT_video folder and the folder in the project. My questions are: - Do I create the folder myself and add the video in it? If not, where is it exactly? - I have to add it in my project. Do I simply show the project file contents and add the folder at the root of it? Thank you for your help! Eduard

Assuming you're using buzztouch v.1.5 (this won't work with v1.4), just drag the video file, the actual movie, onto the BT_Videos folder with Xcode open. Then, enter it's file name in the control panel on Video Screen.

I'm working with 1.4, sorry I didn't mention that before David. I'll switch to 1.5 and follow your instructions! THANK YOU!

I just tried this, I put all the videos into the BT_video folder but when I run the app in the simulator it always says. filename.mov not found I'm sure the spelling and casing is right. What could be wrong?

I'm thinking it might be where he says Just make sure you put the file in the BT_video folder and add it to your project then good to go! I put the files in my BT_video folder, but how do I add it to my project?

Two ways: a) If you've added them to your directory structure in Finder, drag them OVER the BT_Videos folder in Xcode to 'add to project' OR b) Control Click the BT_Videos folder in Xcode and choose 'Add Files'
