Quiz Issue - Remote Data storage and retrieval

Hi all, I am looking to get to grips with several quiz apps. Each one has say 10 sections with say 50 questions in each section. Now, I see references to URL's and further references to something like using a URL can really make your app efficient Now, I have web space on a commercial server and I hold all of my websites there. But how do I hold particular images and particular text(questions) there? Im used to downloading a full website etc. So do I make a new website say questions.co.uk and download a folder say images and a further folder say, text? Then do I call all of my images by specific names? Then do I call all of my questions by say question 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d?? This to me sounds long winded and wrong - so hey you guys - how do I refer to a URL and sub-refer to images and questions(text)? cheers - Dennis

Hi Dennis. Start by looking at this: http://www.buzztouch.com/docs/v1.5-quizzes.pdf What you're describing is easy. You could start by simply putting all your images in a folder on your server, then one text file. The dataURL for the Quiz Screen would point to the text file. The text file itself is where you would list the locations of the images for each question. You'll see the layout of the text file in this PDF

Maybe someone can help me out with this, but I have uploaded a small set of questions onto my server, however when the the quiz portion of the app is selected there is no text. I don't know what the problem is. I read the pdf for URL scripting and I think that I did it right. Any thoughts?

Sure... post the URL to the question's you have placed on your server. I can load that URL in a browser and easily see the format to then try to figure out what the problem could be.

Thank you David. http://www.myquizcoach.com/extras/app_quizzes/biology/biology_quiz_test_small if you could also check out http://www.myquizcoach.com/extras/app_quizzes/biology/biology_quiz_test_larger and let me know why this one isn't working either that would be great. Thank you for again for your time.

OK... both of these files look fine from a syntax perspective. What exactly is happening. 'When the quiz portion of the app is selected there is no text' is a bit confusing. Is the quiz loading but no questions show? you could also... a) Post the exact name of the app as it appears in your control panel b) Post the exact nickname of the quiz you created We can get a look from this end and see what's happening.

The quiz is loading, meaning that you can see the quiz text pic on the screen, but there is no text that appears on top of that pic or text in the area where the answers should be. It is as if the app is loading the quiz pic, but not the questions/answers. The app is MQC Biology and the quiz name is Biology. Thanks again David.

Wow...that was crazier than I thought. Fixed. re-download your apps source-code (a source code adjustment was necessary to fix the error) and refresh app in sim. Should work good. Hint: I look at the quiz and set 'number of questions' to 2. I also set the quiz question font color to black (so I could see it on your white background). Tinker with the other display settings as needed.

I have a quick question about the URL again. I'm making a larger file (about 200 questions). I was wondering if there could be a return on the text file after each question, or if no returns were allowed? It just makes going back to correct things easier this way, but if the app won't work that way it is cool. Thanks.

Returns (carriage returns) are fine. We added a link to the Screen Quiz settings showing a sample file, it's using line-breaks to make things easier to read. Works fine this way.

Thanks for the clarified image. It really helped out. One more question though. What is the best way to display images as the answer choices. I can do images as the background for each question, but I can't make images display as the answers. I tried to add none in the correctAnswerText and tried to change it to correctAnswerImage, but that didn't work either. Thanks again.

Images as the answer buttons are not supported natively. You'll need to grab pizza and a six pack and start your hack-a-thon.
