Streaming Radio Application?

Hi! I'm new to buzztouch, so I hope someone could help me out! I'd like to create a radio application for the android for a live-streaming internet radio station I just started on my website. How could I go about this through buzztouch? I'm not too familiar with java code, so help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Start by searching the word 'audio' in the forum search box. There are lots and lots of discussions about different approaches. You design and the way you try to get this going will be up to you. I would start with a very simple menu item that loads a streaming audio source. If you can do that, you do lots of other things. If you cannot do that, you'll have trouble and will need to brush up on some technologies before BT will be any use to you. Hope this helps

You can also search radio in the forum search box. Hot Wheelz might be willing to help you.

Thanks for the quick replies! I searched radio on the forums and did find HotWheelz's post..how would I be able to contact him? Also, I'd like the application to load as soon as the android user selects it on his/her phone. Is there any way I could do this, or is making a custom URL button the only way at the moment?

Post a message to a post involving HotWheelz, if he/she has subscribed, they'll see the message. To launch an audio screen, yes, you'll need to attach it to a menu item selection.

Okay I see. I'll try replying and see if he responds. Thank you! Also, and correct me if I'm wrong..what we basically have to do is build the application here, download the source code, and preview it with the android/iphone developer simulator? Then when everything appears to be working, we send it off to get accepted to Apple/Android?

Hi HottWeelz! I'm looking to create an android application that will allow the user to immediately listen to the station as soon as he or she selects the application on the phone. I already have the station set up online on my website. I'm using shoutcast to stream it.

Oh, I don't think its on right now..will you be able to still work with it? I'm doing this for a client, so I don't have much control over the radio streaming.

Okay, none of the links in the stream url are working either, except when you click listen it downloads a listen.pls file. I didn't set up the stream, so I'm a bit confused on that.

looks like it would be, our station is running 25 channels which are indeed shout cast server based, however we ALSO relay the shout cast server into something called Icecast .... its like Apples and PCs (Oranges) so I can tell you that our Buzztouch application, *which has been stable for months now* is using our Icecast MP3 stream which is relayed FROM our shout cast stream. I know 1.5 will have many changes and I'm looking forward to them, but Icecast is always good to run along side shout cast so you can satisfy all the people all the time ... (and they say it cant be done :P ) if you start looking at an ice cast provider... I recumbent http://shoutcasti.com they build streams for both shoutcast and ice cast. i can most definately help build your ice cast server and allow it to stream the current shoutcast stream.

need a server that can handle Icecast, like a Linux server. So we can install it. Or find a host that supplies it like mentioned above

You mean a dedicated server, right? If so, I'm not sure how I could get one..the only one I could think of is godaddy, and they're too expensive. What kind of server do you use? Or how could I get/set-up a linux server (sorry I'm such a newbie :P)

Nanh. Just use a host. Like eight dollars a month. Http://shoutcasti.com. Let them do the hard work. Ask for Adam. Show him this thread. He'll know who I am. Since elementary school ;)

Ahhh I see. It looks like an awesome deal, but I have to check up with my client first and see. And how do I ask for Adam lol? I'm not sure if I'll be doing this right now since its late, so what would I have to do next after I've purchased the host?

WAIT WAIT nevermind, it looks like they do support IceCast! I can't believe I didn't notice it on their homepage before going to their live chat haha. So what do I do? EDIT: It looks like they have IceCast With Auto DJ plans already as packages. Did you use IceCast from another website or with shoutcasti?

Okay, I think I'll do that. Since its late over here, I'm going to do it tomorrow. I have a question though..once I purchase an IceCast add-on hosting plan and add it to my current client, will it be possible for me to create an android application that immediately plays the stream once the user gets into the application? Or will I still have to make a custom menu link like buzztouch does? Also, how could I update my android application in the future? Like the url to my radio stream will change soon, so I'd want to send out a new application update. Would I basically just have to re-download the sourcecode and resubmit it to the android website? Sorry for being such a nuisance but I really appreciate the help :)

You'll want to create a menu driven item, to bring the stream in, probably only ONE extra click, you can go on the Android Market and look for Cyber-FM by Droid666 and see how ours works. I dont have a MAC to compile my IPhone app yet. Updates in the future are easy as pie once its live, even changing the stream itself! you will NOT have to redownload the source code, you'll merely update it here. It will push the update to everyone that has it installed.... which reminds me, I have an update to do.

Hi Hotweelz, Sorry for the late reply. I figured out that there was an error on my website that prevented the stream from playing. I got that to work (as you can see the radio station automatically plays in one of my previous posts, since I pasted the HTML code), and I created an android application that would allow a user to click on a menu option that would lead him/her to my website page to listen to the stream. However, once the application was published, we got someone with an android phone to test it out. But whenever he would click on the radio menu button to listen to the stream, the website would come up blank. In other words, the stream/radio station player wouldn't show up or play anything. Do you have any idea on why that might be? Or do these type of radio streams only work with shoutcasti and not streammonster type streams? Thanks!

Hey hotwheels this is really interesting and exactly what we're up to at Radio23! We just got our buzztouch app up in the iTunes Store today: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/radio23/id438744420?mt=8# So if i'm reading correctly you need an .mp3 and not a .m3u linked stream for android yeah? m3us work great with iDevices... but I've been using tunein.com or droid as I can't find a way to stream on it/// ICECAST! makes sense... we use shoutcastunlimited.com and still waiting for an icecast option...
