Lots of Text and Pictures in my app

Hi boys, My app hinges around the Electrical Regulations and Electrical Standards in Britain (so it's not a gaming app and nor will it appeal to the US (which is a pity because the US is large market)) So, my question is this:If I have a lot of text - (and I know that can be boring) and some pics or diagrams (to illuminate it somewhat), what is the best way to present this type of content? Somewhere in your documentation it does suggest that text and pics could go down well with MS Word - which I thought was ideal - but then you suggested it may slow down the app. The structure is this a) Home Page and intro b) next page shows 10 chapters c) pick a chapter and there can be 10 sections on each chapter So Im on for some 100 odd pages - some long - some short - some with a small pic or diagram etc - Don't get me wrong - this is quite a wordy app but to our Electricians (linesmen) in Britain - could be a really good reference in the palm of their hand! Do you think 100 odd pages is too much for an app? Will it slow it down or is speed governed only by the page that is open? Does v1.5 have a calculator or any plans for one? Sorry to be a pain but Im getting into this, now!!

Firstly, I'm sure there are tens of thousands of electicians that will love your app. Gaming's not for everyone ;-) Secondly, you're not a pain. Thirdly: 100 or so pages of content is not excessive. There are different ways to look at it though. If you have a website, you'll ALWAYS be better off organizing the content pages on your website, then 'pointing' to them from the app. There are several design reasons for this, most are related to flexibility, scaleability, and light weight. Large, heavy apps don't always install well from the App Store - you've probably experienced this yourself. As far has how to cut-up the content. Generally, the best way to make good use of navigational depth. Organize your main headings, chapters, sections into scrolling menu's. From the menus you could load individual screens. This is a tough call untill you begin to test, experiement. I'de be happy to look when you start getting things together (assuming you have not yet). Lastly: Calculator. Not really, iPhone already had a good one. Giggling. There are bunch of very cool 'special' cacluators added to buzztouch apps that folks make with Javascript. They are specialized like medical things, weight/balance (airplanes) and other stuff. Maybe there's a special electical calulator that would be useful. Apple will bitch if you add yet another 'normal' calculator to your app. What kind of boat in the pic?

David - I have a website www.mcglynnconsultancy.co.uk and there are lots of formulae at the very back - are you saying develop my site (or another seperate one) and just use the app as a pointer - I can do that!! But when I go onto my iPhone and dial my site - its far too big for my pages! Now I have been looking at Net Objects Fusion version 12 which allows websites to be constructed specifically for the iPhone!! So, are you saying develop a iPhone friendly site and use my iPhone app to point to it? That sounds awfully easier. It also means I can add, delete and modify at my website level and I don't need to go near the app software - Am I looking at this too simplistically?

No, you're starting to get the idea. Again, lots of ways to look do this. I would start by seeing just how EASY it is to make a simple mobile page. Look at the canned HTML when you create a Custom HTML screen in buzztouch. Copy the header, and body html into a doc for easier reading. It's not alot. You can use something like this to create a template or something to paste your content in. This way your pages will be lightweight, mobilezed, and cache/save nicely on the phone. Maybe something like this: A menu system in the iphone, 100% native, not html. You do this using the BT control panel. Organize the layout, menus. Then, each menu is a Custom URL screen 'pointing' to a URL on your website. You could start by pointing to existing 'heavy' pages, then slowly mobilze them to improve performance. Just a thought. It's 3:30 AM here... headed to bed. I asked about the boat because my youngest teenager (14) and I are headed south tomorrow (5 hours) for his next sailboat race. He's very very into it and I enjoy watcing from the bar in the club. Funny. Bye for now.

Dennis, I am exactly the same situation as you. For each page I have created a simple HTML layout using Tables. I keep the table layout as a template then copy and paste information back into the template. It takes me a minute or two per page and I add each page to a menu-list in my App. It was really easy to learn how to do with a few google searches. Could be a method thats useful to you?

Thanks for reply - I am off work for 6 weeks in about a months time and I really want to get this app up and running during this time. Really keen to know more about what you have done! My app is about the Electrical Regulations in the UK - so its very wordy, very factual, and some pics to liven it all up - so yes - very keen to about the html aspect!!

What software did you use to scale down your pics to 57 x 57?
