Updating an App once its gone 'Live'.

Hi, (I apologise if this a really dumb question to ask Im new to this...) Ive recently been building my App through Buzztouch using all the cool new features. My only concern is how will my App update once its on the App Store and being downloaded? I havnt reached the stage where Im ready to launch it, im just planning ahead. Would it update automatically on the App Store? Or do I have to re-build and re-upload to the App Store? Or is it still linked to Buzztouch where I can update it on this site and it makes the changes on the App Store? How does the process work? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I just want to know how and where I make the changes and how they will be updated on the App Store. Many thanks.

Hi in London: Start by loading your v1.5 app's control panel then using the App Updates link (left side bottom), it will give you some 411 about how the update process works. Generally, you don't need to re-submit an update to Apple for content changes. You DO need to submit an app update to Apple if you re-compile your binary. I realize this may be confusing. See the App Updates page for more info and re-post if it still doesn't make any sense.

If you have a need to constantly add info to your app, perhaps you should consider an RSS feed. Put your info (text, images, links) in a form online such as a tumblr site. Then use an RSS page in the app to connect to that feed. You can keep adding articles to the tumlbr site (hosted on the web) and the app will fetch new info. No source code compiling or re-submission to app store necessary.

Ive looked at adding an RSS feed but im not sure if it would suite my needs. My app works like this if you clicked through... Home (Button Click) > List of Names (Menu) > Profile of that person. Im going to look into Tumblr though as Im sure it will be very handy if I need an up to date feed. Thanks for the reccomendation.

You shouldn't have any problem creating the List of Names as a Menu List, then. You will be able to update it, add/delete/change any of the items, and add profile pages without re-compiling the app. You could also consider structuring the profile pages as a Menu List page, with a header image (picture of the person) then links underneath to Custom HTML (text) for descriptions, or perhaps a slideshow page, video, audio, whatever you need gets linked in the profile Menu List. As long as all the media you use is hosted on the web, your app can update and change without re-compiling.

Also, have another look at the RSS/tumblr combo. The reason I mention this is actually in response to your other forum topic Custom HTML Page Advice. If you're not familiar with HTML but want to easily layout a page with some images and links, it could be a whole lot easier using something like tumblr. Just type away, drop in an image, and it will format for you. However, basic HTML to layout some paragraphs, links, images, is not too complicated. Even still, you might try using a web design program that does WYSIWYG layout for you. Just set it up how you want it, then copy code out and into buzztouch.
