1.5 compiled app fails to update no matter what I update from buzz

I had three 1.5 apps compiled (simply name/icon then downloaded/compiled) and installed on my iPod 2G (version 4.1). In the control panel, no matter how many edits I do to my menus, colors, themes, nothing changes when refreshing or re-launching the application. I cannot see any updated I do, just a blank app (see screen shot below) I do not even get a refresh to update popup I normally would get when updating the app from a panel with 1.4. I am connected to the internet - I HAVE re -booted the ipod, and app, and re-installed the app - numerous times. This is what I see on my ipod: http://felixapplications.com/IMG_0057.PNG Coincidentally, this error occurred when compiling the apps but was seemed to be fixed (but may be part of the issue now?): http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=9B9D29C6486410C33FD1284 Any idea what the issue could be? The application is in my control panel and is named Naruto xxx. Here is a link to download the app (compiled) if needed to check the files: http://felixapplications.com/narutoxxx.zip Any help with his issue would be greatly appreciated David! Thanks, David

a) I download the source-code for your Naruto b) Opened in Xcode and compiled in simulator - no problem. c) The simulator show an app that looks nothing like the screen shot at http://felixapplications.com/IMG_0057.PNG, is this the same application? The one I'm looking at has two tabs, the first tab shows a totally white screen with a white navigation bar, is this what you want? Not sure what problem you're having but I can't seen anything wrong with this app other than the fact that is has no content.

From the image that's the EXACT application and that's what it shows, no matter what I do. What you are seeing is what I updated in the control panel that I cant see live - so for some reason it is working for you. I have a small favor to ask of you, could you perhaps download what I have: http://felixapplications.com/narutoxxx.zip and see if that works? This is the compiled version I am using after downloading the source from buzz. If this does not work for you, it means something went wrong at the compiling part, if it does work for you, it means my ipod is broken, which I really doubt is the case! Thanks for looking into this, David.

Single home screen is the 'same' concept as multiple home screens. If you want to have a tabbed app (tabs along the bottom like in many iphone apps), create the home screens (usually menus), then enter their nicknames in the tabbed layout form.

Darren recompiled it and sent it again, I re-installed the new compiled app, and it still looks the same as it did in the screenshot. Any help would be appreciated, really want to get the three 1.5 apps I'm working on working before the end of this month. Take care, David.

Sent him one last try a updated 1.5 app uncompiled. On my side, still shows the same thing, on his side, shows what its supposed to show (just random test tabs/menus). I have 2 other early early early version 1.5 apps installed that work fine, I see no reason why it should show blank apps for me and not update. (sounds alot like this guys issue: http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=47B201A7DF8B55CFA231126) Regards, David.

Okay, reinstalled and restored my entire ipod. The app loaded, asked for GPS, and then just stayed Black. Its a black screen. Re-install and Reboot, app still stays as a black screen. I mean, at least its not showing an empty app, I suppose that's... progress. David.

I've asked this several times. Have you looked at the Console? Oh crap, keep forgetting... you're not compiling these. There isn't much advise anyone's gonna be able to offer unless you are compiling. The Output Console shows all kinds of useful info about what may be going on. It sounds to me like your home screen isn't loading, or, you have a Splash Screen that isn't disappearing or something. Just guessing. It's also tough to say if your iPhone 2 (I think that's what you have) is going to support this. It should, just not sure. If one 1.5 app runs, they all will and it just becomes an issue of figuring out what config data it's using and what the home-screen is suppossed to be.

No splash. App loads fine on darrens friends ipod, so 100% its my ipod. @david I don't think anything you find in my app will answer it, if it installs fine on darrens ipod, it should on mine too. (replied to what you said in the notes thread so we don't go off topic there on his thread). But here's the thing. Those 1.5 apps I have installed that do work, are the ones Darren made for me when you two were messing with 1.5 before it had a control panel (as you know). So they may be different from the 1.5 apps you have as your finished version - which could explain why those apps are working, but the ones I made in the buzz panel do not work. But really, if its 100% my ipods fault, I do not know what do to other then what I have done where I reinstalled/restored my entire ipod. If there was any other way for me to have some sort of windows simulator so I could see the app being made, I could finish my 1.5 apps, but without it working somehow, I would be working blind from the 1.5 control panel. Take care, David.

OK, so all I did was download the project and launch it in the sim. It's running now. The commens are the same as before (if I remember right). Heres what I see Four tabs labeled: Buttons2, label2 page2, YBrammer (the second tab has no icon because blank.png is set in control panel for that tab). The home page is 100% white with a white navigation bar. The title in the navigation bar is Buttons1. The refresh button shows on the home screen and tapping it re-downloads the apps config data from your control panel. So far, exactly as expected. The remaining tabs load Google, Google and Google. Again, just like your control panel is configured. What are you expecting to see? I realize your're only getting a black screen but this app doesn't do anything, doesn't have any content, and doesn't seem to be what anyone would want. Maybe you're planning to add more after getting it to run, I get that. But, since you cannot compile apps, and are asking a friend to, why would you bother until it's got content? No biggie, just wondering. So, I guess we'll have to assume your phones not going to support 1.5 apps. I highly doubt this is the case though, THOUSANDS of iPhone 2's out there are running these apps. Because your's won't, I'm convinced it has something to do with the compilation / install process. Since I have zero clue as to what Jailbroken even does, I'm not sure were to go from here? Wait..another idea: Because it's jailbroken, you can install all sorts of neat stuff. Is there an app you can get on this thing so you can see it's file system? The buzztouch app is downloading and storing the config data it it's data-directory, maybe you can find an app that will allow you to browse this folder on the phone. If we can get to that folder, we can look and see what the configuration file looks like, how it's configured and where the problem may lie? In the simulator you just navigate to it with your normal hard-drive utility. On a jailbroken phone, not sure.

Good notes before... So.. lemme think about this for a minute. What you really need is a way to see the darned things while you create them. Sounds like everyting will be fine if we can get that. But, because you have Windows.. hmm... How many files is Darren sending you when you install? What are the file names? Is one file that you drag into iTunes or something? It's not clear cuz' I've never done it this way. Oh, and did you check to see if you could get an app to browse the phones file system? It would be nice to get to that config data. And, another one, has Darren compiled with the locaiton manager commented out?

Good that you can find files: We're probably walking on each other here in the post ;-) The phone downloads and saves two files when it loads: cachedAppConfig.txt appModified.txt On my machine, I navigate to the them in the simulators file system. They are in an application folder / Documents. The application folder has a VERY LONG cyptic name. If I delete an application folder, it removes the app from the simulator. So I guess you're looking for where on the iPod file system app's are stored. Specifically, THIS app and it's documents directory. The documents directory should only have those two files. Everytime Refresh is tapped these two files are deleted, then redownloaded and re-saved with the same file name.

When darren compiles the app, he sends me: nameofapp.app folder. I go into my device, drag that folder in with my other app folders directory: here is a screenshot: http://felixapplications.com/ss.png

The reason for this black screen (and still yet to find a fix) is the new greenpois0n jailbreak. I don't know what it does, but somehow it interrupts Buzztouch apps. Mine runs fine, but I get constant emails saying there app can't open. Unfortunately it would be really easy to track down the issue is the app crashed, but it doesn't. There is an app in Cydia that tracks apps when they crash etc, I think I was talking to you before David B about it, it is called Crash Reporter. Since it is pretty much deemed useless, the only thing we can do is check the syslogs right after the app opens to see what the last strong is, or whatever. The apps work fine on my iPhone, so David S is going to have to have a look. I'll reply back here an let you know how to do that, I'm stil researching how syslog works. The simulator works fine, I guess this issue is just with devices itself (Because they used the greenpois0n jailbreak). The location for the cache is unknown on jailbroken devices right now, I'm still looking. If it was an actual app through iTunes, it would be located in /var/mobile/applications/long-ass-string-here/cache/ I originally thought it was an issue with the gps because when you open the app it asks you for your location, then you get the black screen, but now with the location services coded out, people just get a black screen. I need to find out where jailbroken devices keep app files like the cache not only for you guys, but for myself as well. People are opening my apps as I'm updating the config file, so they get a configuration file error, and its cached in there system or ever :( (unless they restore)

@darren: right, doing a global ftp search now. [[[[[[[[[What you really need is a way to see the darned things while you create them. Sounds like everything will be fine if we can get that. But, because you have Windows.. hmm...]]]]]]]] That SEEMED to be the case, but as darren says, it now seems that other people may also run into this black screen issue regardless if I can make the app blind or not. I would still rather have the apps up working for say 80% of the people, and 20% for the black screen people, rather then 0% for all the people. Also its a longshot, but I really think that maybe you should compare the apps I have for 1.5 now working and the 1.5 ones you have done as a finished product (control panel ones), there is a difference, the old 1.5's work, the new 1.5's don't, maybe look into that as a last resort if darrens idea doesn't work, if were lucky, the two versions are not too far different. David.

cachedAppConfig.txt appModified.txt 0 results for those files in my iphone. So the app launches, but does not save these files / grab data from buzz server (would be the right conclusion?)

Its a fresh jailbroken ipod, the only app installed is the one were trying to fix. I don't know, I used WINSCP search files function, entered the file names, and searched the root directory (/), took about 3 minutes each keyword. David.

I can maybe zip up my entire iphone directory and send it to david to check it out. I don't know, I could re-jailbreak with something else. Other then that, how is the conversion 1.4 to 1.5 going? Any news david on this or on the converter? Thanks, David.

So here is the news... I spent all day yesterday jailbreaking and restoring my ipod to multiple firmwares and multiple exploit jailbreaks, and I always ended up with the black screen. I'm going to say that its not the jailbreak that's screwing up buzz apps, but the older ipods, something about the ipods. I'll have to buy a new one, but for now, I can make 1.4 apps, and then use the converter to 1.5, I don't need to see the 1.5 version if the converter does what its supposed to do, I wont have to worry as I know my apps will look/function the same as 1.4 only on 1.5 software :) I wont be able to actually make any custom 1.5 apps without seeing the updates live - so that's the only downside. In other news, I think David has lost this thread! Take care, David.

I havn't lost this thread. I've been travelling, working, and working some more. I'm still not sure why some apps work on your device and others do not. I'm also not sure why thousands and thousands of these things work on iPods, iPads, iPhones but you're don't. When the 1.4 conversion is done, you can try that. I'm not convinced it's going to fix anything though? Fingers crossed.

I have no idea, maybe Darren can look more into it if he gets more reports on his apps, I'm just going to buy a new iphone/ipad or some newer version ipod to fix the issue on my end, but until then rely on the converter to keep me running blind. I call it quits on this black screen issue, I can only go so far I am not as smart as you guys :P. When I get my new device, I can clean up the old ipod, and send it over to buzz offices with the app installed so you can check it out first hand - if your really interested it wouldn't be a problem :) I was going to suggest dropping it off and saying hello, but your 7 hours away from me. Anyways, I honestly am dying to see the converter in action - good luck with it! Thanks, David.

Something occured to me. David mentioned that he may have removed some files from some projects to lighten the load. Could it be that some files were removed from the BT_Audio folder? If so, this could be our trouble! When the app first loads, it loops though all the sound effect files in this folder and prepares some sound-effects so they work if selected in the control panel. If these files are gone, this could be the entire problem. Just a thought. I'm not giving up on figuring this out, Jailbroken or not, the damn thing should work! LOL

Hey David. Good thought, and I thought that me messing with files might have done it, but darrens compiled multiple versions that I haven't messed with and they all installed the same. (its a jailbreak issue for sure, buzz itself is working fine) I bought a iPad today (was meaning to upgrade anyways, but this gave me a good reason to do it now). The app works perfectly jailbroken on it, so, for now - I am happy. :) Regards, David.
