This is a strange one. 'but I wanted to know why my original key I made in keytool isn't working' - um, I don't think anyone here could answer that. If you're sure you have the right password and alias, all should work - right? With that being said: Are you aware of the differences between Debug and Release Google Map API Keys? Be sure to have a look at the .xml configruation file for the maps screen. It's in res/layout/screen_locationmap.xml (may be typo in that file name, going from memory). Get a look at that file and be sure the map is loading the correct API key - Debug or Release. Hope this makes sense.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The .xml file for location maps (in the res/layout folder, in your downloaded source-code) is clearly visible. It looks like this: android:apiKey=@string/googleMapsAPIKeyRelease All you're doing is setting this to eitehr @string/googleMapsKeyAPIKeyRelease OR @string/google/MapsKeyAPIKeyDebug, depending on whether you're compiling for debug or reelase. I have no idea what your .keystore file will 'look like' - I've never tried to look at it. There is no reason to 'look at' the .keystore, it's an encrypted, garbled file not meant for humans to read. Have you followed the instructions on Google's site for creating Google Map API Keys?

Sorry didn't get back sooner, I really appreciate the time you put in here! Yes I successfully created google map API key...was trying to use same key to publish app...I created a new key this time in eclipse and I now have my .apk file

Bought a Mac, it's official, you're hooked! LOL. Go for it, you'll be making dozens of apps in no time.
