DELIVERY: Select Users not the World

If I wanted my app to be available to a select group of users, could I put it on my website instead of putting it on Google or iTunes App store? I'm think of two scenarios 1. A public website where you might want the app available without having to go to an app store 2. A nonpublic site where you only want certain people to have the app.

You can do this with Android, you cannot with Apple / iOS. Apple controls who can / who can't use your software by forcing distribution through the App Store. For Android, simply park the compiled .apk file on your webserver then navigate to it with the devices browser. Use the export signed application feature in Eclipse to produce the .apk file

Sad face?partially. I know some of my users will be on Android but the bulk are on the iPhone. I wonder if I could get it up on the app store and then pull it down at will?I'm guessing that would not be likely. Is there a way to self install? Could I email it to someone?

Look in the iOS developer portal for Distributing to developers. Apple does allow you to enter a small number of devices (100 I think) as developer devices. You could distrubte to them without using the App Store. This would work if you have a very very small number of users (under 100) but would not work for larger groups.
