Compiling an app in Eclipse - eclipe working but getting errors

Hello, I wouldn't be the most technological in the world, but I've got Java, Eclipse & plugins inc google ones installed and can make new android project in it. So I've made a new android project, and imported in my source code for compiling from buzztouch as per the buzztouch youtube video, all so far so good. My new project now appears on the left of the screen in Eclipse, but I've got 101 errors and 167 warnings in the 'problems' tab near the bottom of the Eclipse screen: They are complaining about things including geopoint, mapactivity cannot be resolved to a point, map view cannot be resolved to a type, import com.google cannot be resolved and a few errors about methods. I have not a clue! Any help much appreciated......... Thanks, Elaine.

Hello, OK I tried doing this again a few times, so now I have (for some reason) just 100 warnings, and it doesn't give me an error anymore when I try to compile it (green play button at the top of the screen). When I hit this button, it says there is no android virtual device installed. Not sure where to go from here.. Thanks! Elaine.

ok - made a virtual device. (sometimes persistance and dogged determination does work!) The simulator is now running, and I clicked on the bottom arrow on it to show the list of application icons, but no sign of my app :( thoughts? (I've just closed it and relaunched simulator again) :(

Hey... progress without assistance - you're getting there! You first post looked like you didn't have the necessary Eclipse Add On for GoogleMaps. See the README.txt file that came with your app. If your using a Map feature you'll need to make sure you have the Google Maps stuff ironed out. Emulators are HORRILBE in Eclipse / Android (compared to iphone) but you'll get it. If you have a device, it much easier to use it for debugging. Connect it with the cord, adjust it's settings to allow non market apps then look for it in the Device list when you choose which device to install on. If you don't have a device..we need to find where the simulator put the app. CLicking the bottom arrow on the simulator to find the app doens't make any sense to me. Look in the simulators list of applications Settings > Applications

Great news! Keep tinkering, you'll be amazed at what you can create after a few days of understanding how it's put together. We're hard at work on v.1.5, it's soooooo much better and flexible and powerful, etc, etc. Send an emai to info at buzztouch.com with Early Adopter as the subject to get a sneak-peak before it goes public.

Done! First app live on Android market last night! :D Second app now wip. Same problems with it not appearing on the compiler. I'm getting this error displayed in Eclipse: Failed to find an AVD compatible with target 'Google APIs'. Still no compatible AVDs with target 'Google APIs': Aborting launch. Any thoughts would be wonderful. Thanks again!

Great news about the Android Market. not appearing on the compiler is confusing. You mean no in the simulator? Sounds like you are trying to run in in an emulator that is not configured to use the Google 1.6 APIS

Yes sorry in the simulator. I do have 2 versions of eclipse installed, maybe thats it. Anyway, turne dit all off, came back 30 mins later, booted it up and it appeared on sim in 20 secs (after about 6 hours today not working). Again no idea why :) I am loving the quiz btw. Just one question - in the sim I have 19 questions in one quiz, so its crashed twice now near the end of the quiz when i've been testing it. Is 19 too many questions for 1 quiz, or should I just ignore the crash? Thanks again :)

I'm not aware of a limit on the number of quiz questions. However, there do seem to be a larger number of issues with the Android project vs. the iOS project? If you find a magic number or somethign (a number that doesn't crash) post it on the forum. We have been workind hard on the next version, iOS nearly done. Android too follow. For this reason, it's hard to find time to track bugs and little things on the older version. Good catch!

David, could you help me out? did'nt want to start a new thread as this is kinda related I've just come across your excellent site today and decided to go straight into building an app. I'm now trying to compile the apk with eclipse/android SDK etc but I'm having some difficulty. I've downloaded the source code and unzipped this into a new folder, and followed the readme.txt, the problem is I don't get the automatic 1.6 check boxes after i've selected the source code folder. Thing is when I first tried it I did'nt have android project as an option after selecing file/new...so I selected file/new/project and I could then select android, the check boxes appeared but I was getting an error message saying I already I had a project within the folder and it would'nt finish the process. After a reboot of the pc, it now has android project as an option after selecting file/new/ but when I've tried browsing to the source code file again it just does'nt show any 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 checkboxes as it had done earlier. any help would be appreciated, I am a bit of a noob to all this, but after putting the app together I'm dying to try it out now! I'm also getting this error from the eclipse console... [2011-01-05 22:28:37 - com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.internal.project.AndroidManifestHelper] Unable to read C:AndroidManifest.xml: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:AndroidManifest.xml (The system cannot find the file specified) I was getting a similar error before the reboot which showed the androidmanifest.xml file in a different location (where the source code file was) but it still had the same java.io error. I'd installed the java JDK earlier too.

Glad to hear your enjoying this. So, getting your box setup with the Eclipse environment playing nicely with the Android SDK can be tricky. Apple and iOS make this much less complicated! It soundsl like you still dont' have the appropriate Google / Android SDK installed that Eclipse needs to find before this will work. There are several thread about this, I'll find a URL....

Thanks for the quick reply David, I've reinstalled the SDK and now have all the add-ons (Google API's etc) succesfully installed as per the threads you sugested. Now get the following error.. invalid project description and the top header says an eclipse project already exists in this directory. I've gone over the video on your site for using eclipse and android but it does'nt show a project file in the folder, the zip file with my app already has a project file in it? is this correct??

Thanks for the quick reply David, I've tried reinstalling the SDK as I'd definately done something wrong with that. Now it shows all the correct API's via the SDK manager, but when I try to load the new project I get the following error messages... invalid project description & An Eclipse project already exists in this directory. Consider using File > Import > Existing Project instead. I've checked your help videos and my app source code has a .project file in it whereas in the help video there's no project file in the folder. Is this correct? I also tried using the above suggestion and importing the existing project which it seems to do, but it then says there's an error in my project, please fix before running.Trouble is I've no idea how to fix the problems. would love to get this working and my chosen tag of lost but trying seems very apt at the moment Thanks for your help keep up the great work

I'm getting the same errors Elaine originally got but I am not using any Google maps functionality. I tried figuring out the API key anyway but can't fine the keytool in my SDK. Very frustrationg. They tell you to use keytool without providing any info on what keytool is and where to find it.

I hadn't got any google maps functionality in my app, but all buzztouch apps currently uses a location / map service that looks somehow at google maps and thus doesn't like it when those 'techie' parts aren't all set up correctly in eclipse. 1. Open eclipse, go to 'window' and then the 'android sdk & 'avd manager' dropdown. 2. (sometimes even if you've set this up correctly, a few weeks later it can give you the same errors cos you haven't the latest google map thingys and cause you the same issues) 3. Click on 'available patches,' 4. Select all, and install all. Be really careful here as if you do it too quickly you won't select all of them and you'll only install half of them, again I did this :) 5. For good luck, turn off eclipse and turn it on again. Also, to get rid of location bit on your app (default, its there!) search on here as David wrote out how to do it already (it was simple, just delete out a few lines of code). Don't know if that will help on the google errors sides of things but its cleaner to take it out rathe rthan confusing people who buy your app as to why you want to know where they are. good luck & hope it helps. :)

Thank Elaine but that didn't really answer my question about keytool. I did install all the patches but nothing changed at all. I was able to build and publish an I-phone app from scratch using xcode. But getting this thing built and ready for publish has been extremely frustrating. You would think Google would define keytool and where to find if you need it. Argh!

doh sorry :) For the two files you have to browse to when you are exporting a signed copy from eclipse (hope this is the question!), one ot do with keystore, one with somethign else I can't remember, for both I just made up a new folder with nothing in it, browsed to it and it worked. I think for one of them I had to write in a new file name for it to save to, but basically it worked for me by just giving the eclipse program the address of where to save the keystore thingy to. I think though this is if you use a new/different keystore per app, which I did. I hit my head off the same rock trying to find a keystore, but eventually if you just make up a new folder nad point it to there when it asks it does work. Hope that was more helpful! :)
