xCode 6: Now or later?

Hello all, I've been searching the forums for any discussion on xCode 6 and iOS 8. I'm realizing that Apple often updates xCode and the operating system, and our development needs to keep up. So this brings to mind a few questions: 1. Do I have to use xCode 6 right now, or can I do this later? 2. When submitting apps for approval, does Apple now require use of xCode 6 and development for iOS 8? 3. Will future apps be rejected if I don't use xCode 6? Thanks for sharing! Janeen

I can't authoritively answer your questions, but I will say the move from xcode 5 to 6 iOS 7/8 was far less painless than the move from xcode 4 to 5, iOS 6/7 As in, no big deal. Cheers! -- Smug

I think the update is ok and like Smug said painless. I did have this issue though that I wanted to try to get fixed if anyone has some suggestions. https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=BD61091EACB141FEA0F2487&fid=06DB0BCB08E2222&sortColumn=FT.id&sortUpDown=DESC&currentPage=1

I made the move as well, and experienced no issues during the upgrade. There is a compile problem that seems to creep up, but the workaround to it (adding a variable to the plist file) is well documented in the forum. With Apple, I think it's always best to be updated. Mark

I don't know how long these answers will be valid, but... 1. Do I have to use xCode 6 right now, or can I do this later? ---> You can do it later (I didn't upgrade yet and things go as usual) 2. When submitting apps for approval, does Apple now require use of xCode 6 and development for iOS 8? ---> Not yet! (I'm still on Xcode 5.1.1 and have submitted an app 6 days ago without problem) 3. Will future apps be rejected if I don't use xCode 6? ---> Not yet (see above) Cheers Jack

Well the advanced quiz plugin doesn't work with xcode 6. And I am having fits trying to fix it. I know that it is a big component in your app. So stick to xcode 5 for now.

1. Do I have to use xCode 6 right now, or can I do this later? Doesn't particularly matter right now. It works with Xcode 6, but it also works with Xcode 5.1.1. If you want to optimize your app for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the you're going to need to use the latest version of xcode. If you don't want to deal with those complications right now, just stcik to Xcode 5.1.1. 2. When submitting apps for approval, does Apple now require use of xCode 6 and development for iOS 8? No. If you submit via Xcode 5.1.1, you'll be fine. iTunes Connect requires the minimum of Xcode 5.1.1 for submitting apps, so don't worry about any of this. 3. Will future apps be rejected if I don't use xCode 6? Eventually. Normally the cut off is around January/February. It was last year, so if you're planning on releasing updates after the New Year, you will probably have to use Xcode 6 by then. However, you can build your initial app now and later you can use the later version of Xcode. One thing I must say is that there seem to be one particular error with Xcode6 at the moment. The error goes along the lines of 'Cannot find .plist file'. This is not serious, and the fix is so easy. Just delete the 'test.plist' file from Xcode: http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=F42D8239A330C321132944A&command=isSearching&currentPage=1&topicTitle=xcode%206&createdBy=&repliedBy=&minViews=-1&maxViews=-1&minReplies=-1&maxReplies=-1&forumCategory= Xcode 6 is a bit of a redefined Xcode 5.1.1. Not many things have changed... it just adds support for iOS 8 and the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
